Hydra-Matic 4T40E/4T45E

So I understand my LTZ comes with the 4 Speed Hydra-Matic 4T45E. I remember reading on this board that this tranny can handle about 250hp before it grenades, is that correct? I'm considering forced induction on my 2.2 (see SS/SC Swap thread) but I wonder how well the transmission would handle under relatively high power. I know the L61 motor will hold up, but I don't want to go Turbo or S/C when its available and end up destroying my transmission in a week.

I already see the "...you shouldve bought manual" replies coming...

The transmission can handle excess of 250hp, but the Torque converter can only ahndle about 230 lb/ft of torque.

Now, it wont explode, but it will wear down eventually, its about a 200-300 dollar part, but the labor is what really kills to get it replaced.

It should hold up to the abuse though. and by the way, there are no forced inductions for our cars yet.

...you should have bought a manual...lol, but anyways i know that Hahn is planning on eventually making a turbo kit for the 2.2 auto, if they can find the interest... As for true tested ratings for the 4spd auto that im not sure of... but w/ the auto u will have to wait a while longer then the 2.4 or 2.2 manuals will. Come to think of it i dont know of anyone that has an auto turbo kit "in the works"... Your best bet would be asking a 2.2 auto driver w/ nitrous(NNNNAAAWWSSSS!!! )

Just thinking about the future, I mean I'm hoping these F/I kits come out eventually lol.

The auto trans is actually able to handle a greater amount of torque then the manual. The reply conserning the input torque to the converter is correct. With an upgraded converter, the trans can easily handle upwards of over 300 ft/lbs of torque. Just like the manual guys have to replace their clutch with a performance part, so do the auto guy have to replace the torque converter with a high-stall performance unit. I have a 3000 RPM stall built by IPT. The unit was $500.

The Tranny is rated for 190 WHP and 220 wheel Torque to give you an idea.

The converter as mentioned is the only weak link, once it's upgraded and a Tranny cooler in place, it should last no problem under the heavier load.

Those numbers are a bit off, but there have been different numbers published by GM themselves in different locations, so it's hard to get a solid number. The best data I have on the trans itself, not the converter, is that it can handle 325 ft/lbs of torque stock. The converter is only rated to 205. So an upgraded converter gets you over a hundred more pounds.
