Just installed a drop in K&N filter

Hi all,

I've read about modding the stock 2.2 intake and removing all of the stuff under the airbox but since it's been so cold lately, I just installed the drop in k&n filter and took the car out for a spin.

I must say, with just the drop in alone, there is a noticeable difference. I know the car feels more responsive and definitely revs up a bit faster (I have an auto trans)

I've noticed that with just the drop in filter, it's definitely louder as well. I would imagine it would be even louder if I removed all of the stock baffles under the airbox but so far, it's a great little mod that takes little effort! I would recommend those of you with an auto tranny to go ahead and get the drop in filter. just for the responsiveness alone I think it's a worth while mod to do.

I'm almost content at just leaving it how it is now (without removing the baffles) but may attempt removing the restrictions when it gets a little warmer out.

just thought I would share

You disconnect the air intake after the flter box, which removes about 7-12" of useless plastc tubing from the air intake

how much louder is it with the airbox mod? is there really a major increase in power when you remove the airbox?

i leased my car so I'm trying not to do too many things to it, but if it's worth it... i'm up to removing all the extra tubing...

what do you guys think.. is it worth doing? (the airbox mod)

Tonight I removed the resonator/duct assembly from the front fender. The intake tract is so loud you can feel the vibrations in the car. Time to turn up the radio.

As for the derrier dyno? 2nd gear feels alot better (That's likely an illusion)... but that's about it. Personaly, I wouldn't bother until you have exhaust work done. After that, the biggest restriction to the motor breathing is the throttle body.

So, in order this is what I'd do:
2.5" cat-back Exhaust
Injen or comparable CAI.
UD Crank pulley
Header, 2.5" DP + high-flow cat
Larger throttle body if possible.

My idea is that once you're able to afford and install all the above mods, a larger (useful) throttlebody assembly will be on the market. Or you could just bypass that entirely and go after the GM Performance Parts custom intake manifold ready for an LS1 TB.

You guys aren't getting the CEL? I know that seems to be a problem with the 2.0 SC's.

K&N installed

I just installed my K&N CAI last Tuesday and have yet to get a CEL. I have a 2.0 and I didn't remove the negative battery terminal as instructed. I am not that mechanically inclined and it took me about 2 hours and that was because I took my time. I was PO that I cracked the plastic fender wall while trying to get it back around the brake. It sounds pretty cool when you start to hear the supercharger at higher RPMs. I have also noticed a so soslight increase in power. It was worth the time and money IMO. I've put over a 100 miles on it so far with no CEL and, knock on wood, hope I don't get one. Good luck to anyone else that decides to go for a K&N CAI.

you guys are exaggerating on the intake resonator removal...there is not even a huge difference in noise.

My exhaust sounded slightly louder but nothing extra from under the hood...and no power increase. I'd only recommend it if you're bored because the difference before and after is minimal.

The bast part is the baffle removal is free, and it is louder. I didn't tell my wife that I did it, but she asked what I did to get it louder, it's not much, but everyone notices. As for performance, a little response, but not much power increase

My bad, I thought I edited the part of his post that I was quoting. I was ditto'ing what he said about power increase. Out of all the cars I have done box mods to, I never notice power increases.

K&N adds about 2-3 hp with resonator delete mod of course. Also makes the car a HELL of a lot louder than stock

It does not make a big difference...installing an intake makes a big difference in noise...removing the resonator gives just a hint more sound. Nothing to write home about...definitely not shaking anything in my car.

As I said, my exhaust note was a tad louder but as far as engine noise, and that reving sound you get with an intake for instance, not there...

Jack the car up and take off the front right wheel, remove the wheel well far enough that u can reach into the opening with a wrench and arm , unbolt the resonator and pull out wheel well. Instant Intake sound after doing it too.

This combined with a K&N filter is good for around 2-3 hp.
