"Low" gear question?

i have an 06 cobalt lt sedan, i got bored/pissed last night so i went driving and decided to see how fast the car could go since i have yet to take it to the limit since owning it. i got onto a back country road and put it into the "low" setting, btw i have an auto, and floored it and it shifted once and then i dont think it shifted again... i got to the end of the road and turned around and then started from about 0mph in low and floored it, i think i got to about 70mph before it stopped shifting...

anyways im wondering why it does that? im sure theres some cake answer but i just thought id ask? i know some cars have that tiptronic **** where you have to manually change gears even with the auto trans but there isnt a place to change up or down so idkk

because it's an auto and you had it in "low" gear...that's why it stopped shifting....

Low gear in auto will only shift from first to second at red line, "I" gear will shift up to third

Yes, L has harder shifting first and second, in second popping it up to I has slightly harder shifting into third and if you have a base model and no tune you wont get out of third before you hit the speed limiter.

Haha, newbie! jkjk, but yea you should only use those through second gear while racing/towing/steep hills. btw, don't just ride around in them because if you drive for extended periods of time in, say, second gear at 40 mph it will def. cause a lot of wear and tear on your engine and tranny. i used to do this in my old monte carlo and next thing i knew, transmission shot out

Riding around them is just fine (except for your MPG and maybe your mounts too). It actually helps the trans because it does firmer shifts. Firmer shifts = quicker shifting = less slipping
