New to tuning....

Hello folks, my first post here.
I have a black '05 stock cobalt coupe.
I'm completely new to car tuning.
I have limited knowledge on car work in general.
But I'd like to do a few things to my Cobalt.

The first mod I was considering is a cold air intake.
I've got my eye on a K & N 69 series Typhoon kit. Part number 69-4515TS.
A link to it here....
http://www.knfilters.com/search/prod...Prod=69-4515TS
I can pick it up for about 200 bucks I think.

So a few questions.....
What is your opinion of this intake? Are their better options?
What about the 200 dollar price tag? Reasonable price?
How difficult would this be to install? If anyone can share some info on the installation process, it would be appreciated.

Thanks

installtion .you can do it yourself...it is a good price...however ... i would look at getting the INJEN brand only caise it is versatile to serve as a SRI and a CAI

Can you recommend a specific INJEN part?
And sorry, SRI and CAI? You lost me there, as I said, I'm new to this.

personally I wouldn't add a cai. The maf sensors in these cars are just too sensitive.

There are alot of people who put them on and run fine... but there are also alot of people who run into problems because of them

sri=short ram intake

short ram the filer is still in the engine bay, like the k&N and the GMPP, cold air is when the filter is inside the fender wall(down the hole where the airbox is, that way you get colder air, colder air=denser=more hp

the difference between an sri and a cai is about 5 inches of pipe.

sri pulls air from inside the engine bay, cai pulls cooler air from the fenderwell

with my SRI setup i get quicker throttle response. with the CAI installed i feel the car breather better past 3000rpm when i'm enjoying a spirited drive. right now i'm running SRI with the 2.5" exhaust i get quick throttle response and little loss in the top end due to the better breathing provided by the exhaust.

Yea I think the maf problem tends to pop up more with the ss/scs. like I said alot of people run just fine with an aftermarket intake but there are alot of people that see problems because of them. Not even big problems. But I'm **** like that

So the intake I linked to in my original post would be an sri?

And back to that, it seems like a fairly easy mod that I could handle.
Looking for specific alternatives to the K & N part or should I stick with that.

Navajoe, could you tell me more about MAF and CEL?
I assume these are error codes or something?
As you said "I am **** like that" that would be me too.
I'd like to avoid even small problems.

Thanks

*edit*
Oh and not sure if it matters but my Cobalt is a 5 speed.

MAF=mass airflow sensor. It reads incoming air coming through the intake
CEL=check engine light. gives you trouble codes for troubleshooting and diagnosis with the use of a scanner

I don't have a cai on my car, but from what I've seen I'd go with the injen setup. Seems what most people are going for so it's gotta be good. lol

the CAI sits down in a hole under the passanger side headlight which is where the coolest air is ..there for it is drawing in the coldest air. The SAI sits right on top of the passanger side fender so it is closer to the motor and draws in the warmer air from the motor

So to install, all I have to do is remove the old box and install the old one?
I wouldnt have to take a bunch of other parts out to access random bolts or anything would I?

I would love to hear from someone who has firsthand experience installing this or a similar intake.

well there's two ways you can get in there. 1 would be to take out the pass. headlight assymbly. 2 would be to take off the plastic in the front part of the wheel well.

you're going to have to take off the stock intake assymbly and the bellows tube in the fenderwell.

yes... he is right ... i would recommend taking out the wheel well plastic...much easier and make sure you have a drop light handy and the intake should come with directions...whatever you do ...do not purchase the FUJITA intake ...it is crap

there having a group buy on the INJEN intake for the 2.2's right now that you might want to get in on

Thanks for the help so far everyone.
I'm sure I'll have a crap load more questions but I gotta be at work in like 5 hours so I better get some sleep.

Is there a detailed "how to" guide on removal and installation?

Thanks again folks.
Done for the night.

The CEL prob. on some intakes is caused by oil from the filter getting on the MAF. The AEM uses a dryfow filter so no oil. There is a Cobalt meet coming up on the 27th in Columbus https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/front-page-news-17/official-columbus-oh-meet-10-27-a-74514/

that's also a problem. But changing the airflow characteristics in the intake can affect the maf. Making the airflow run to the front car side of the tubing, the top of the tubing, the bottom... can all throw the maf readings off, as the bulk of the air isn't going through the maf.

i have had my AEM CAI for almost a year now and have not had a CEL at all...the original CAI that AEM came out with were throwing CEL's left and right due to the fact in which it was a 2 piece design and the air wasnt flowing right due to the connector throwing it off by letting it think that it was taking in too much air and making it run lean . Then AEM figured out what the problem was and they designed the new 1 piece design which does not throw a CEL
