noisy 2.2 help
so it seems that my engine is making more noise then it should, i drive a 2.2 l61 auto,
my engine bay seems really load compared to my fathers 2.2 l61 auto,
what could it be making all this noise?
imo it shouldnt sound like this , it sounds unhealthy?
and i do realise it could be a many number of things , but whats the most likely? valve train, lifters? alternator, cylinders? timing chain. and would there be any tell tail signs if i took the valve cover off?

Well one thing that can contribute to a noisy motor is 5W30 oil, if your running it. I personally live in NYC, and am a firm believer that you should not run anything below 10W30. 5W30 is good for short distances, but if your a city driver and a lot of highway 5W30 is just not thick enough. Will you hurt your motor, no. But I can guarantee that motor will start burning oil 1000s of mile earlier then a motor that ran the thicker oil. These eco tec motors I notices aren't the most quiet, but they are not loud. If you really think something is up check for intake and exhaust leaks. At 100k you should already be running 10W30. Take it from a former 2G eclipse owner with the oil burning 420A motor

you do understand the only difference between 5W30 and 10W30 is that 5W30 provides lower temperature protection than 10W30 (the W stands for Winter) the 30 number is what is rated for standard engine running temperature (210* F) so being the same numbers its the same viscosity, and same protection. It most likely is an exhaust leak, or from you being a little tougher on your car (the gas pedal is fun, i'm not judging, i love mine). Did you install the exhaust or have a shop install it? with 100 and some thousand miles there is potentially a flex joint that has rusted out (not familiar with the gmpp exhaust set up)

10W or 5W is how it flows during the winter, not what kind of protection you get. Using 10W30 starting your car up at like 17 degree weather isn't making a difference if you run 5W30. The only time that would matter is if you live in a very very cold climate where if you did live somewhere where its like -30 you should buy a block heater. 10W30 is a thicker oil then 5W30 and offers better protection at normal driving conditions. Nuff said.
