The Official RollermanDan Build Thread
#227
Glad to hear sir! Man It's been a lot of years on this forum...and I've followed your stuff for a while. I use to be more active in the early years but recently have gotten back to posting on the site...I've always lurked around.
I think everyone that trys to do stupid builds with Cobalts finds themselves having to take a break at one point...guilty here but such is the beast of life. It's been a goal of mine for all these years to finally get the car done, fired up and racing. After that, who knows what'll happen but I need to at least finish a chapter in my life (even though having a car...it'll never end )

We're working on the 25.5 cage now as well as the placement of fuel cell, catch can, and more. There's a lot of things in this project I can't talk about just yet due to not wanting rule revisions.
Soon I'll grab some pics of the engine area...but for now the hood has to stay shut.
Still fully expect testing by late March with full passes in April.
I know it's hard to believe....but this is actually happening...and it'll breathing again in the very near future. For those of you that have stuck around, all I can say is thank you! You better believe I'm going to run for FCOTM.

A Nightmare of a Former Roll Cage
Taken a few days ago...title says it all...this is the atrocious work that would have been called a cage. To put it lightly, if this thing would have had an accident...I would have been dead. Let alone if I pulled the parachute the first time it would have ripped out the entire "anchor" point. There main hoop / horizontal bar was slanted (hoop to right side horizontal bar 17", hoop to left side horizontal bar 18"). Thankfully, there's a new one going in at the hands of Jimmy Almany!
Trunk area where the former "cage" was.
Drivers area all clear again. at Almany Chassis Design.
Look at the absolute **** welds.
More bad welds.
Closer view of crap...
Here's where the parachute "anchored" to...laughable.
After cutting an area of the cage, the weld literally blew off the rest of the metal.
The "chromoly" had a few areas on the main hoop that were literally squished down and did not retain full circumference.
And sure, why not add heavy rusting inside of the pipes.
But alas, she's in good hands now and will have a hell of a set up after Jimmy Almany is done with her!

What class do you plan on running? Be careful of how far you go with the cage and chassis. Same thing I'm running in to right now but I've been emailing Cliff Wallace and clearing some things up.

Most of them apply to the firewall and the chassis. Some classes you have to run stock strut mounts, stock firewall, no full tube chassis, etc. But Outlaw is just, you build it you run it and the fastest will win. Other classes will limit turbo size and tire size. Look in to who is hosting the event and read up on their rules. Majority of the sport compact events follow nearly identical rules.

Plans as of now are for a few IFO events, Dragmania at PBIR, couple races at Orlando Speed World, and MIR World Cup Finals.
Classes....
IFO: Forced Induction Pro or FWD
Dragmania: SFWD
Orlando: Pro FWD or Pro Street FWD
MIR: Street Fighter or Super Street
The events that we have the option to run in either class will be a last minute decision (probably while at the race) as to our best chances to walk away with a win. Luckily you can switch things up pretty quickly on these things.

Sorry it's been a little while guys...been very busy with work and all sorts of travels. Here's a few pics to nom on for a bit.
Progress, glad to see the quality of design so far from Almany Chassis Design ( Jimmy Almany )!
The new seating will be super light weight Kirkey Racing Seats.
The main hoop and beginning of the 25.5 funny car cage.
A look inside from the front of the car of the new progress.
Closer view....this is gonna be a sweet design!
Love it already, there's a lot of work left to do..but I know I'll finally have safety.

Been a little bit of a delay due to waiting for parts / part of the team out of the country...but more work is going on...and progressing faster every day.
I know that I had hoped for a start up by now but still waiting on a few items and then all should be good to go for final install or everything else. Should be able to paint the cage in about a week 1/2 and be certified for 7.50 and slower.
Few pics of more work on the cage.
It'll be done when it's done...I've waited over 7 years...what's a few more weeks?

Moving quick now...
Looking at about the halfway point now with the full outline of the cage in.
Having the cage this far forward will hopefully help with keeping the front end down.
EXTREMELY tight fitting cage!

Correct! Was formally from the GM / Roush Racing engine line that was formerly in the several sport compact series races around the country. Has some stupid serious internal work. Weakest part of the entire car will hands down be the transmission...which we have spares ready .
Please guys, if you have anything to comment on or ask....please do! Sometimes I wonder if this microphone is on or something.

I got a chance to stop by Horse Power Sales / Almany Chassis Design today with my camera to take some more photos and see the progress on the build. Another bar was in the process of being installed heading towards the back. It's a large hoop that will eventually connect through other bars down to the trunk and into the parachute anchor / mount. As of now, the entire cage is only tack welded in place until the final welding happens.
ETA as given on the cage to be fully done, painted, with parachute w/ cable and release / co2 air deployment system, window net, ect and cert is 2 weeks out. In the mean time the mock engine and transmission will be put in to help out the chassis guy on the front suspension in the next week - week 1/2.
After that ladies and gentlemen comes the fun part of wiring and getting all the other odds and ends tied up. Figure this, more work has been done in the last week than what has been done in the last 7 years .
On to the pics!

Few more pics...
Driver rocker bar fitting.
Passenger side.
Two new bars run down from the main hoop to the next one before shooting down into the trunk / parachute anchor.
Miles and miles of tubing!
Can't say anything but how pleased I am so far with how things are turning out!
Final one.
