I don't claim to know a lot about these cars but after reading the first page of results on Google it seems as if our cars use electrical power steering - an electric motor that assists us in turning the wheel. From what I read the power steering will shut it's self off or limit its help if it gets hot. I've also read that when they are on their way out they randomly stop assisting you in driving. What are you normally doing when the light comes on? Have you been holding the wheel turned for an extended time? Do you go from all the way to the right to all the way to the left?
Get 'er scanned

Uh, how about these cars have EPS.

More than likely you are going to have to replace the whole column. GM had an old bulletin about it saying it was just the motor. They just came out with a new one saying it's something else, not the motor. Column will cost you ~$550 brand new.

Mine goes out as soon as I turn my car on. I just drive it w/o power steering. I have no money to get it fixed right now.

GM really needs to do a recall!!

Motors are separate from the column. I changed out the motor on mine as that's what the GM Bulletin stated to do for my specific code. C0475 or some crap. I changed out the motor and it worked fine for about 3 days and then it went completely out. About 2 days later GM came out with another bulletin stating that it was the electronic box on the column causing the problem, not the motor.

I agree, GM really does need a recall because this is happening wayyy too muft. And uhmm, it's a $600 part. Saying you buy it new from GM.

Angry

well i got the work from the dealership..... this is what is on the work order.

*complaint* customer reports the service power steering message is on the dash(WG)

*cause* (93) possible customer induced code
J9993 . 3

*correction* scanned vehicle for codes. code c0000 is present in power steering modual. no bulletin present for code. followed code speed sensor code can cause code code C0000 to set. scanned ECM for codes. code P0502 present. code is a speed sensor code. searched for bullitins. found bullitin #PIP4515. followed bullitin and observed freeze frame data. engine load is at 100%. RPM 1974 and vehicle speed is 0.code is possibly customer induced from slipping clutch. cleared all codes and test drove. no codes are retuning.

so my question is ...did they **** with my tune?

customer induced my ass!!

When I had problems with the EPS, I had to get the whole column replaced under warranty. Has been fine ever since and it's been a while now since I had that done.

Man i hate to see these dealerships always jump for the "customer induced" crap, i never do that ****, it has to complete abuse before i will try to blame something on the custy...

That light could be caused by more than one thing, so it's important that a competent dealer check out your car, but most likely it is the column...

My PS light randomly came on the other day. Turned the car off, started it. Light gone, no problems.

i have this same problem while im on the free way or just city driving it goes off on me.since i have warped rotors i think when i hit the brakes a little to hard it shakes the speed sensors and the speed sensors are connected to torque sensor which are in tied with the steering column. which turn off PS. that my theory on why mines going out, but im leaning more toward that the column if f**ked. mines not under warranty so i i kinda have to do it bye myself. bc i don't want the dealer to tare me a new one lol
