though you really shouldnt check or change the gap on thin wire electrode spark plugs (platniums and irridums for the most part) unless you really need to. I have to because they dont sell the plug I want with a 0.032 gap and I have to gap down to not get spark blowout.
for gapping..preferably you would use a spark plug gapping tool lol. If you are VERY careful you can use needlenose pliers..but I wouldnt necc suggest it.

Most people are going to damage the electrode while checking the gap on these newer plugs. Those of us who know the different technique between gapping the thing wire plugs vs standard copper plugs can avoid it. And in theory the protectors on the plugs should prevent them from getting the gap changed during shipping.
