r.pm. tach question on 08 cobalt

hello everyone,

i just bought a 2008 cobalt n i love the car.i have had it for about 15 days.this last sat. i took it to the track in dallas, texas. i had a problem looking at the tach when i was going down the track cause its too far down. so this weekend im going to be installing an r.p.m tach. i was reading on the "how to"section and they only have wirte up how to's on tach lites and there installs where on 2.0 superchargers so is it the same for process for my 2.2lt, can i run 2 tachs or do i have to cancel the original?any info will help.can anyone tell me a short write up on how to do this? thank you

Why are you going to run a second one? The current one is fine.

You will be hard pressed to find an appropriate 'Tach Signal' wire on the Cobalt, for it communicates with its instruments via CAN network protocol, which is all digital.

There is a fix, however...it's called the Tach Adaptor from AutoMeter, and it will develop a discrete four-cylinder tachometer signal for you to use with tachs, shift lites, you name it. It wires in to the power supply wire for the four coils, and 'counts' the pulses, converting them into a tach signal. Very effective!

well i just wanted a tach instead of the light because that way i can look back n see what my shift points were when i go to the track and i have never been a fan of just the light.so if i get the shift lite how do i install it on to my 2.2lt?is it the same as the ss or is there a diffrence?

I think you'll ned the Tach Adaptor in any case, whether shift lite or tach, 2.0 or 2.2...but check with your vendor or manufacturer, they may be aware of some other method for these. If they are not, the Tach Adaptor will get it done.

I have a 2" Tach
Using the MSD Tach Driver because my tach does not go into 2 cylinder mode. It can be done but your rpm's will be off by about 100

try connecting the tach signal wire to one of the wires coming off the coil plugs

with your ignition setup it shouldn't be any different than an SS/SC

also, you really don't need a tach adapter if your tach has a 2 cyl mode but in any case your tach signal is going to come from one of those wires.

unfortunately I don't...I would maybe start with the wire thats being given in the 2.0 how-tos and start from there. worst case scenario you just have a bunch of stripped wires but it shouldn't hurt anything to test them out.
