Unfortunately it's becoming more and more popular with the "Redneck Tuner" as it's so cheap and simple to build one out of the outhouse..

If you install one, please don't tell anyone as we will probably flame you..

BTW: I will say that the system made on this Cobalt 2.2 is built alot better than the one I quoted.

All the pipes are well placed.

True but the necessity of having your turbo system setup like this is just not necessary. Just too much room for errors in my opinion.

110 % Agreed. It is a massive comprimise in performance for ease of install and cost savings.

Wow... I have to feel for the Protege guy... the first time he drives that in the rain... he's fucked...

As far as the rear mount turbo goes... it works fine on airplanes... but think of the amount of weight you are adding running all that piping... not to mention having the turbo completely exposed to the elements... ick...

No sir... I don't like it...

It would be awesome on something like a boat where the gas is on and stays on.

sts has been doing remote mount for a few years at least. they had a remote turbod HHR at last years sema, and said they were working on a kit for the 2.2. hp tv just did an STS twin kit on a c6 and got 536whp on 7psi i think. it keeps your engine bay clean, and leaves you open to twin charge. i was going to get a kit for my silverado. they have a clip on their website of a truck plowing through sand and mud puddles and its alright. and for front drive cars that keeps the weight off the nose and helps to equal out the dist. and they let you finance your turbo so you dont need your 4-7k up front.

A boat would be nice... but where would you remote mount it to? the front?

Engine's already in the rear... with plenty of space for a turbo or sc all around it.

Good theory though... once the massive turbo lag is over, you don't have to worry about it for a while.

Well at least we know they're developing something for us, since that is quite obviously a cobalt that the turbo is on.

I thought STS turbos were good?

they are supposed to be, these two are just hating. the ar's and housings are sized to accout for the amount of travel the air has to do. they say you couldnt just take the turbo from the back and put it in the front because its sized differently and wouldnt work right. the guys from HPtv said that lag wasnt any worse than any other turbo car. and they say since the piping is so long you dont need and IC since the pipe cools it as it travels forward. if i had the cash right now id STS my silverado but i dont.

I have asked them exactly how they tune that set up via email and have recieved no reply. Anybody can bolt the hardware on the car. Getting to run is another story.

I'll chime in here as STS's former East Coast Regoinal Manager,

Rear mounted turbo's work great on V8 cars, there are a few 9 second GTOs and Corvettes out there running STS kits. Rear mount turbos work great when you don't have any room under the hood but on a four cylinder, front mount kits are just as easy to install and are usually cheaper. My 500/545 RWHP rear mount Camaro running 8 PSI kicked ass with full boost by 3,100 RPMS much better/faster then a Procharger.

Lingenfelter's TT Vette, most 911 turbos, APS 350Z and GTO all have turbos that are about that high off the ground by the way.

The intake can be protected via water guard and dry charger. A rear mount turbo also runs cooler too so with low boost at 5-6 PSI your intake temps are pretty much ambient with no need for an intercooler.

I have driven that yellow cobalt and it isn't too fast with just 5 PSI. 5 PSI is usually good for about a 30% increase so it was really only a couple hundred 200 FWHP, it's not faster then a S/C SS.

It was all re-wired with a stand alone system, a total pain.

There is a civic ex running around town with a rear mount turbo from sts. The outside is completely stock with some 17 inch rims and tint. Under the hood it looks very stock, and has no front mount intercooler. The turbo can only be seen when it is on a lift and it has a recirc bov. It is basicly the best sleeper Ive ever seen, but I have never raced it, yet.

I don't think STS will make a Cobalt kit, not enough money in it for them. A $7,000 GTO kit or C6 $8,000 is profitable and comes complete with a tuning solution. A $3,000 Cobalt kit isn't very profitable and STS won't sell a kit unless they can deliver a full kit with tuning.

That Cobalt was for the 2005 SEMA show I'm not sure why they did it.
