RPMs surging while driving, any thoughts?

I have been trying to figure it out for a while. I will be driving and if I accelerate a little, once I stop the RPMs will jump up around 500rpm. It doesn't matter how heavy I accelerate, I can barely tap the gas or hit passing gear, but once I stop accelerating the rpm will jump up about 2-3 seconds after I'm finished. Has anyone else had any problems like this? The dealership couldn't give me a reason why, and there is no CEL.. probably the reason they can't tell me anything god forbid a tech have any knowledge without a code reader. If anyone has any thoughts please share I think this is the reason my mpg is suckish right now.

nah already cleaned the TB, that wasn't the issue. I figured it was a sensor or something electrical, so I think what nightstalker is talking about is a good bet. Gonna order it on Monday, I can get it $70 shipped from GMpartsdirect.com

If you clean your TB, don't mess with the blade. I had the same problem. I cleaned my TB, and messed with the blade moving it constantly to clean all the build up. Put the TB back on, and it hanged when I tap the gas. I had no leaks anywhere. I local guy sold my his TB for $30 bucks, and it fix the problem. I also recently talk to a tech service from my local chevy dealer. He said when I was messing with the blade on the TB, I messed with the calbration on open and closed loop. Which he think is the reason it was surging.

Yes, but it was doing it before I even cleaned the TB, it's not hanging up it's regulating then surging a couple seconds later.

Good info, mine does the same thing but when ever i come to a stop or driving slow like in a parking lot or something. The other day while backing out at work it actually cut off, i cleaned the tb and it did ok for a little while but it's back now. '06 with 130,000 miles

By the way how many miles on average does these engines usually run if taken care of? Some one told me that a 2.8 in an s-10 won't run past 150-180 but it now has 275 and still running strong with no engine work, not even a clutch. I guess it depends on how u drive and take care of them.

Dude my 2.8 S-10 had 295k on it before I sold it. No leaks, no problems...passed smog like a champ. I sold it to my mother-in-law and its still going. All depends on the driver like any vehicle.
