Running Open Header??

I plan on running open header for awhile when I get them. I just want to know in advanced if it will damage ANYTHING? WOT?

Just curious before I go and break something..

You won't break anything, it'll just be loud as dirt and you'll lose power.

No damage, but it will throw a P0420 code for not having a cat.

You probably will want to put on the exhaust after the first cop that you come across gives you a noise polution ticket.

this is just what someone told me once when i was doing exhaust work to my z-28 years ago and i only had the headers on for a week. my autoshop teacher told me i'd burn the exhaust valves, and that i was losing alot of low end torque, which was true.so i took his word for it and finished my exhaust. i don't know if he was right but everything else he said was....

Where your exhaust system only involves your exhaust manifold (aka header) and the rest of it is either removed or disconnected from the manifold, basically making a huge exhaust leak.

He said it will be for a short period of time. I don't think he's doing it for performance or anything.

FYI: Open Downpipe FTW! (sorry, I had to)

do you already have an exhaust on there? i could understand maybe not wanting to put stock exhaust back on til you got one on there but if you have an exhaust then why just disconnect it:P not trying to hate..

If you run an open header for an extended period of time...
1. You'll need a hearing aid in a week or two
2. You'll run a high risk of warping an exhaust valve.

I have been told this also, but don't know how it happens. Maybe something with how the exhaust pulses

maybe without any backpressure the valve wont close fast enough and cause it to slam into the valve train as it comes up slow, but dont take my word for it

Yes this will be ONLY for a short period just long enough to get my exhaust bolted on, I was just curious on the damage it would do just in case I couldnt get my exhaust on for about a week or so. Ive helped bolt on headers on IonNinja's Ion and have heard them open, its crazy loud, sounds sweet for a while but not for everyday use, thats IMO. Anyways thank you all for the help.

not really that i remember , of course that was 12 years ago. another thing was occassionaly it would shoot flames out the exhaust. so that might have something to do with it. i noticed this at a gas pump no less looking at the reflection of my car just as i started it up. talk about scaring the **** out of someone.

If it's anything like it was when I did it with my camaro the car will shake like crazy and it'll be loud as hell when your driving, I thought I was gonna go def and I didn't let it over 2000rpms. As long as you don't have any wires or anything near the opening of the header then nothing should be damaged.
