Scoop hoods

okay...so i know a lot of people rig their scoop to feed their CAI...but since the scoop isjust a hole on the hood with a screen...wouldnt water get sucked in there when its raining? how would you prevent water from going into, say the RK scoop hood and entering the intake?

Well I'm not speaking from experience but this was just a thought. You could put a custom bypass valve on your intake and set it up away from the scoop. Dunno if that will work or not but figured I'd throw it in there.

yeah you would need to pour water down the hood opening to cause a problem

I have a concern about this as well. And yes, it is a valid concern. I would like to get the RKS hood, but I'm thinking I would modify it by blocking the duct to the air intake and drilling holes at the rear center of the hood to vent the air over the back of the engine across the exhaust. That way it doens't matter if water gets in there or not.

im sure that there should be no real concern there since it would have to be a whole bunch of water to really get into the intake, ill be getting this hood and i know it will be no problem

Im thinking about putting some piping under the hood to redirect the air from the scoop directly to the intake...and am worried that too much water will get in the intake...see what im sayin?

how bout this for a solution:

make a custom piece of metal, plastic, etc, that can fit over the hole and create a cover that you can use when its raining.

I posted this on the How to for the GMPP intake since they were talking about the RK hood what was said there is it should not be enough water to do damage

I guess it has to be submerged in order to do inmideate damage but wont the lil bit you would get in a rain storm with time damage it or does the engine create enough heat whatever to make it evaporate

My guess the subis have a top mount intercooler with a huge scoop Im sure they get more water than a Rk hood would get us but it is an intercooler not an intake and I guess they are made to endure that just like the radiators and condensers they are of different material we are using a DRY filter and it will hold water but I just dunno how much of it and for how long and if it is wet and the dries up and cathes a lot of dust and crap it will stick and dirty up faster

I dunno much of what I just said LOL it was in between phone calls at work but that is I guess what I meant to say

yea guys, the filter would have to be submergerd in order to cause a "straw effect" and suck up water like a straw, with the curves in the ducting of the hood, nowhere near enough water to cause damage would get through to the filter.

dude. Use periods.

Anyways, i would be woried, but can't you get a dryflow thing that fits over the filter and prevents hydrolock?

same here dude...when i get my Injen in a couple months (too poor right now) i think ill keep it a SRI till spring...then its CAI time, but i'd still like to set up the hood to push air into the SRI to make a SRI/CAI hybrid...and dont want to worry about rain

Get the dry shield for the filter and I would think you would be ok in most situations. If it was raining extremely hard, I would make a plate or something to either block off the vent or cover the top of the filter to make the water divert away from it.
