Check this thread and see if thats basically what you want to do. I cant vouch for it as I only have the base model, but I think this is what your after.

Dude, I cut my filter box off right above the sensor, shaved it down a bit and attched a e-1009 k&n filter and BAM!, CAI! Sounds just like the clips from all the prototype cai's . saved $250 in the process too.

I would personally find an intake off the same kind of car, but maybe a wrecked one or seemthing, and get it cheap/free and expirement, that way you still have your's in case you mess something up, you're not out anything

I custom made a filter mount for my girl's 2.2L Isuzu Amigo. It's not that hard... I ordered a piece of metal tubing with a 90 degree bend, some hose clamps, rubber connectors and a K&N cone filter. To make it fit I just took a hacksaw and dremmel tool to the stock air box. Cut openings on the sides and front to allow for increased air flow. The box holds the filter great. From what I can tell she got about 5hp off of the conversion, but more importantly she's netted about 5MPG as well.

It looks like the stock pipe the filter is all the way in the wheel well. I will probably end up getting a aftermarket CAI eventually, till then this is the same godddamn thing.
