Is there a difference on L61 from 05-09?

I'm looking to purchase a 06 Colbalt LS (pretty sure it's a L61 2.2L) that has a engine knock (sounds like lower end) for cheap....I'm considering rebuilding the engine or just doing a swap with a known low mileage good one...Is there a difference throughout the years (05-09) that would make this swap more than just a r/r? Thanks in advance.....

05-06 came with a gen 1 block. 07-08 (09 was the start of the LAP) had a gen 2 block. Coils are different between the 2 generations and the gen 2s have a cam position sensor. PCM's are different too. That's the basic differences between them.

There are also ECM changes between the gen's. L61's: 05-06 has a 16-bit E16 ECM, 07-08 has the E37 32-bit, 08+ ???.

So it's advisable that I stick with a 05-06 engine for a painle$$ swap..I'd say. What upgrades should I do cyl head/valvetrain/rotating assembly. Etc...should I decide to rebuild the stock one? I'm really going to use it for a commuter but would like more MPG if possible through internal mods..Thanx for the responses..

You wont gain anything MPG wise from doing internal mods. Just swap a low mileage motor for $400/$500.
