Think I have engine damage....

I was out and about last night tooling around and found my favorite stretch of twisty road to play on. Was having some fun (never got over 70mph) and was downshifting from 5th to 4th but somehow and I don't know how on earth I did it, I hit 2nd gear. I caught it really fast but the tach swung right past 7K rpm before I could catch it. I didn't really think anything of it since it was for a split second until I got home. As I rolled into the garage, I turned off the tunes and heard a noise I didn't want to hear. A definite metallic clacking like a loose rocker or bad rod bearing. What are you guys' guess as what happened inside? I'll be taking it to the stealership on Monday to see what's up with it. I've never hit 2nd gear like that in any car before so I don't know what the hell to think?

Well it depends. If he bent a valve badly enough to have it strongly audible, he should lose compression in that cylinder and would probably have noticed some issues while he was driving. We need an update

The sound you describe may be a broken rocker arm or worse it could be a broken valve spring. BTW did you get a tune? If you got over 7K RPM your engine should have cut fuel and timing to prevent overrevving?

^^^ and the posters above...appears they miss CC08!

It was running fine before all of this happened. It didn't rev over 7000 rpm by me giving it gas. It did it when I accidentaly downshifted from 5th to 2nd at 65 mph. Today I fired I up and everything sounded normal. I drove it around a bit nice and easy and went to the burger join to get some food. I reved it a bit in N to see if it did it again and all was peachy. Got to the window to wait for my food and after sitting there for 5-6 min I tried the light revs again and it started doing it. I turned the car off while I waited and drove it home very easy and didn't get the rpm over 3000 rpm the rest of the way home. I think it's a rod bearing because it was fine until the engine warmed up good. Hits on all 4 and no missing.

65MPH in 2nd isn't all that much.. You should be fine broski.

Not as bad as when the SS/TC first came out; some jackass was driving on the on-ramp on a highway and went from like ******* 5th to 1st or some ****, at like 85MPH. There was a thread about it somewhere on here.

I don't know about fine, the noise is still there and it's pretty prominent. I wish I had my digicam to get a video of it. It sounds ugly. You know how lazy our tachs are, I saw it sweep clear past 7K and into the 8K zone when it happened. But like I said, I'll let you guys know what it is when the stealership tears into it to see.

How the hell did he get into 1st going that fast?

Op, if you're still hearing weird noises that weren't there before, that don't sound good.

My rev limiter is set to 7200 and when I pull it that high in 2nd i hit about 65ish. So you didn't rev it much past 7200rpms let alone 8k. Have a family member or friend rev the car in your driveway as you try to locate the noise. First figure out what part of the engine its coming from, dont guess. If its in the head, pull the valve cover and investigate. If its coming from the bottom end, pull the oil pan and do the same.

Also, does the noise get faster as the rev's climb? Or does it appear around say 2000rpms and goes away after 2500rpms? Do you hear it at idle or only under load? Answer these questions and we can help you a bit more.

It's there at all engine speeds and gets worse as rpms increase. It sounds to me like it's in the bottom end. A bent valve would cause a miss or stumble on that cylinder and will do it right at start up. This appears only after the engine has reached operating temp. Dealer is having trouble locating it.

Compression test. If that passes, find the specs for valve clearances and check that.

If you floated a valve you would know it, trust me.

Was diagnosed as a collapsed lifter on number 3 exhaust side. Weird??? Never heard of that happening unless the lifter was bad or too much spring pressure? Picking it up later today. Will post up my findings of whether or not it's fixed.

you can float a valve and have the engine run perfectly after. the problem is when you have bad enough valve float you bend a valve. Slightly bent valves can still maintain decent compression if it isn't bad, but since he says it doesn't happen at startup it is likely something else.
