I was out and about last night tooling around and found my favorite stretch of twisty road to play on. Was having some fun (never got over 70mph) and was downshifting from 5th to 4th but somehow and I don't know how on earth I did it, I hit 2nd gear. I caught it really fast but the tach swung right past 7K rpm before I could catch it. I didn't really think anything of it since it was for a split second until I got home. As I rolled into the garage, I turned off the tunes and heard a noise I didn't want to hear. A definite metallic clacking like a loose rocker or bad rod bearing. What are you guys' guess as what happened inside? I'll be taking it to the stealership on Monday to see what's up with it. I've never hit 2nd gear like that in any car before so I don't know what the hell to think?

Well, I flogged the hell outta it today and I can say that the problem is fixed for sure. I had a weird clattering at cold startup that went away after a few seconds of running (before this issue appeared). I passed it off as a typical cold start, no oil top side yet. It doesn't do that any more. Guess it was a bad lifter! Car runs great woo hoo!!

For that one second at 7000 RPMs it bent a valve or broke a bearing?
I thought you manual owners were always bleeding gears.
That sucks that an 08 Cobalt has engine damage from a one second mishap.

If you exceed the tolerances of a part, it doesn't matter how long you are past that tolerance, there is a good chance it will fail.

My automatic has sometimes hit 6500 RPMs when I had to punch it, and the redline starts at 6500 and I have not had any problems.
I know my wife's Sunfire with the 2.2 Ecotec and auto tranny has done the same many times and has 110k miles and it runs like new.
500 RPMs makes all that difference?
Personally I wish the computer limited the RPM to 6k and not 6.5k, but sometimes in a situation where no one will let you over and you see the concrete barrier 50 yards ahead, you do what you have to.

tis why i backed my rl back down to 7k instead of the proven 7.4k tolerance of the stock lsj springs.
in my logs even with my 7k rl i see 7.1xx rpms being hit and you don't wanna take the chance of smacking the rl and going over the tolerance.

Well guys/gals its been a while and I can safely say, problem solved! Car runs just as good as it did before this whole mess started. It still isn't faster than my Titan tho. Me and my girl like to pick on each other because my truck is faster than her car even when I drive the Cobalt......lol. I get a good jump on her until 3rd gear, then it's all over. When she drives the Cobalt, it's pathetic.......lol. All good fun tho!! Cobalt is still fun to drive for what it is. Sometime next year after income tax season, I'll be looking to trade it for a 03-04 Mach 1 or Cobra. Then the real fun can begin!!

Mach 1 is the way to go...I'm looking at 05-06 GTO's and 03-04 Mach 1's. I'd rather have a Mach 1 and supercharge that than get a Cobra. I really want a Solstice GXP/Sky RL, but the wife said no 2-seaters...we have a 1-year old son, so I have to have a back seat just in case.
Glad to hear the car is running fine.
