Underdrive Pulley Set for 2.2L/2.4L
Guys/Girls, I am trying to gauge interest in an underdrive pulley set for our cars. I have contacted both March and ASP to see if they have any plans for our applications. So far, only ASP has replied. ASP has experience in the import and domestic small car market.
On our cars, not having a belt driven power steering pump our kits would consist of a smaller billet aluminum crank pulley and a larger alternator pulley. The billet aluminum would decrease the amount of rotating mass and the change in pulley sizes would make it easier to spin all of the belt driven accessories. Think of multi-speed bike smaller sprocket in the front and larger in the rear easier to pedal; larger in front, smaller in rear, harder to pedal.
Their street kits usually yiedl 7 to 15 HP, increase accessory life, yield full charge output under "driving conditions" (at idle voltage will usually be slightly reduced).

I am just curious if ASP has any intentions of producing an underdrive pulley kit for the GM Ecotec engines (for the 2.2L mainly; the 2.4L has VVT and the 2.0 is supercharged). I'm not sure which engines you could make street kits for, but I am interested in finding an underdrive pulley kit for the 2.2L Ecotec, in my 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt.

That is knida how we decide what to make. We look at the initial interest but also the long term interest. What doe sthe part fit , how long will it be in service. We also have to have a car to test so it really starts at that point. You get me a local car to look at and we can procede from there.

So where are you located?? I'll try to see if I can locate anyone close that could come by and let you take a look at their car. The Ecotec is a global engine for GM, so many vehicles are included in this category late model Cavalier and Sunfire, Cobalt, Redline, and Pursuit/G5, HHR, Malibu and others.

personally i'd be more interested in a 6-8rib pulley system. but then i'm already aftermarket f/i so yeah. good luck! ASP likes their $$ and charge big bux for custom pulleys.

Personally I wouldn't ever deal with RSM.. heard of too many bad experiences with product fit/finish and bad customer support.
That and I don't think underdriving the alternator on a car with electric power steering is going to be very smart for daily driveability and power steering motor life. The headlights will already dim quite a bit when maneuvering in parking lots.

You have a belt driven power steering pump?? Cobalt's and Ion's have electric power steering; no belt driven hydraulic pump and no fluid.
All I know is that we put a set of underdrive pulley's on my brother's S-10 and you could tell a difference. I was impressed with the difference just from changing out the pulleys. Maybe nobody else is interested, but I am; they are common for V8 cars and V6 and V8 trucks. I prefer taking more of the power that is driving my accessories and putting it to the ground.

I'm old school
1. GMPP has always made an underdrive pulley for the Ecotec from the beginning. As well as MANY other places. These are not new.
2. Using an underdrive means losing voltage at idle RPM. The alternators don't get spun fast enough. Be aware of that.
3. Ecotecs have never had a belt driven power steering pump. They were driven first by the intake cam shaft and bolted directly to the head. Look at a J-body. They went to electric in 2005. That's why there is that cover plate on the end of the cylinder head where it looks like something should be bolted.
4. You are probably mistaking your alternator, AC compressor, or idler as a power steering pump. I assure you, you don't have one.

Let me first say that an underdrive pulley isn't that big of a deal as some people make it as far as charging goes.
You guys should be fine with an underdrive pulley if you do decide to get one.

We will have a setup available for all the 2.2L / 2.4L / and 2.0L ecotec platforms available Jan 07 . We will have a underdrive as well as a overdrive available ....shhhhhhhhhh top secret though . We already have the prototype done and installed . More info will come throughout the month .

Not really necessary. Unless you have some big audio system that is constantly drawing high amounts of power from the battery, I wouldn't even bother changing your alternator pulley.

Wow, can't believe i missed this thred SO
1. Am i the only one with lighten pullies?
2. I hear lighten is way better then undriven
3. Talk to -Md-HHR on chevyhhr.net he is making the pullies
4. I bought my lighten crank pullie from z-spec and the alt pully from -md-hhr
5. Didn't know i missed it i have pics of the stock crank pully and gezus its heavy cast iron
