What do you all think?

I have a 2005 Auto 2.2L and was wondering what you think my horsepower gains would be with the following mods: SMS throttle body, Pacesetter header, Injen SRI/CAI, and cat back 1.75 to 2.5 to Magnaflow muffler? Also what other mods besides the obvious FI and nitrous would be good for horsepower gains around the 300$ range?

Well, lets see. You've got the intake and throttle body. You are still stock on the manifold and head. Then you've got the header, stock cat, then cat back exhaust. Sound right?

If so, it makes the future upgrades easy to see. Start by completing your exhaust. Go with a high flow Catalitic converter. You have a nice header, then a restrictive cat, then a nice exhaust. Fix that.

The only other things left are the manifold and the head. There are manifolds out there, but for normally aspirated engines they will do nothing for you. You can stick with the stock unit for that. Head work would be all that is left, but that isn't $300.

If you choose to do some head work, I have a suggestion. Make it a project, you will have much more fun with it. Get a core head. You can get one for probably a couple hundred bucks. I know for a fact that you can buy full core engines with the head off ebay for $500. Then take that thing apart and work on it a step at a time. Send it off to your local machine shop for a port and polish, and maybe a valve seat job. Then get some nice aftermarket valve train parts, like valves, springs, retainers, cams. Don't rush it. Do it as the budget allows you to.

That way, your car is still together and useable, and you can throw the head on when it is all done and ready, no rush.

When you do it, I would also recommend using ARP head studs to put it back together. The GM Goodwrench head gasket kit, which includes new hardware, is $110. You only get to use that hardware one time because it's torque to yield. But ARP studs can be reused, and that allows you to exchange that head again in the future if needs be without having to buy a hundres bucks worth of bolts again.

well, I know that the GMPP cat back will fit your car.
There is a link www.gmperformancedivision.com

check out the section named performance pulse then performance articles. There are 4 sections to building power in the ecotec.
Thats a great place to start.
I am trying to remember where the Cobalt bible for building the engine is.....thats another great source of info.

I don't, the How-to never answered if it fits or not, but this is from the SMS site:
ION 2005-06 (Excluding RedLine Models) IONTB0506 $ 373.47 8.25%
ION 2006 2.4L IONTB06 $ 323.47 8.25%
ION RedLine 2004-05 IONTB0405 $ 323.47 8.25%
If I am not mistaken the Redline is the SC model and the Ion is the step-sibling of the Cobalt and both share 2.2L ecotecs and there is a 2.4L listed.

What king kind of gains can I expect from the Pacesetter header to a high flow 2.5" Stainless Catco cat and 2.5" SS piping and a 2.5" Magnaflow Muffler? Also where would I go about getting header bolts?
