I think the 2.2 is the best engine in its class.. compared to like the Focus, Corolla, Civic, etc..
The torque is pretty nice from the engine..
Fun driver..
Good looking car.. (well mine is at least) lol
Its just a great car.
As for cons, haven't ran into any except that its not supercharged/turbocharged and there is no tuning out for it yet..

as AZ mentioned out of the box the car is very competitive to its peers, but dont put too much hope in having a tuning solution anytime soon. its been right around the corner months now and ive seen no hard proof anyone is working on it. just claims that its gonna be soon. GM screwed the pooch with the ecm in this car, as soon as i can im gonna get something else that ill be able to build into the ride id like it to be. looking at the gxp solstice but im gonna find out what ecm and how it can be tuned before i spend any money this time.

Pros-
Reliable engine
28-36 MPG (personal measurements)
Affordable
Good looking
Cons-
Not really a con, but it is for a tuner, not a bunch of aftermarket support. Most vendors give the majority of their attention to the SS's
Crappy wheels/tires on the LS w/o sport package
Not everyone will agree with my cons, or pro's even. But those are my personal opinions...

when gm puts out the supercharger kit for the 2.2 in another year or two there will be plenty more options for after market parts...i know there is one for the 2.2 cavi's but i dont think it fits the cobalts or the ions

Pro:
lots of power for the class
very very smooth and quiet
gas mileage is decent
seems to be a durable long lasting motor
Cons:
doesn't seem to respond well to bold on modifications (if that is a con)
over shadowed by the 2.4 and SC engines
large size for the class means you'll prolly never get into the 40mpg range
some say it's not powerful, but i think it's more than enough for the cobalt.

I'm old school
Speaking strickly about the engine...
Pros:
If you never mess with it, it will probably never break in hundreds of thousands of miles.
If you do mess with it, it's VERY easy to take apart and put back together again. There are LOTS of engine parts available from both GMPP and the aftermarket.
Cons:
It is louder then other engines in its class due to chain driven cams and balance shafts. But you will never have to replace those chains.
You can't tune it, yet. But, you will be able to, soon.
