iam so frustrated were to begin!!! basically my coolant temp. sensor was bad or atleast i thought it was because periodically the coolant temp would read --- but i replaced the sensor yesterday and this morning on the way to work ....what do you know!!! goddamn temp reads ---- and that noisy ass secondary fan comes even from a cold start ......after replacing the sensor i thought well **** maybe its the pcm ......so i took out the vector tuned one and popped in my oem stock pcm ...i thought i had nailed it but now it just did it again WTF!!!!! IS WRONG

My wifes has been doing it on & off also,
Causes
1) Air filter is dirty, I blew my wifes out with air & it was fine, Make sure to also clean the tube & sensor
2) check & the secoundary fan is running & not the primary the car thinks it is over Heating
3) I disconnected the battery & it went away!
4) Dirty injectors can als make it do it
5) Not running the recommended octane>> Which my wife was putting in 87 when gas was high & Not what is recommended by GM, when I found out she was running it I made her switch back & did the above & it went away for a year.
Whats funny is it is now doing it again & last time it was cool out just like now! But I never replace the filter & it is do!
The way it's programed the whole system is tied together & it could be several things, But like I stated most likely it's the Filter!

it might just be the connection to the display. or a bad thermostat.

point taken lol hold on lets clarify some cause iam not sure ...what are you referring to when you say "thermostat" are you talking about the coolant temperature sensor ????
#15
Thermostat controls the engine coolant temperature. It is a heat sensitive valve that opens when it reaches a predetermined temperature. It can go bad in that it doesn't open resulting in overheating -- OR -- it stays open which causes the coolant to flow through the engine too fast and is cooled too much via the radiator so your engine doesn't get up to the proper temperature. When your temperature displays 200 degrees for a few seconds and then drops down to 190 degrees it is due to the thermostat opening. The thermostat should be closed when the engine is cold so there is very little flow of the coolant to allow it to warm up quickly -- when it reaches the correct temperature the thermostat opens and the coolant begins to flow.

GM Part numbers:
2.2/2.4: 90537453 (seal included)
2.0: 21018811 (includes 2 seals)
Here's a shot of the location(2.0 engine -- 2.2/2.4 similar):

the dealer said nothing came up. i checked it at midas where i used to wrk and i got nothing. what really bothers me is if the car doesnt know the temp. then why doesnt a light come on on the dash to warn you??? i thought it should. esp for someone who may own teh car who knows nothing about cars.

a bad thermostat wouldnt cause the display to show ---. the ar would still be able to read the temperature if the t-stat was fucked up. Id say you have an electrical issue( obviously) possibly a short in the circuit that leads from the temp sensor to the ECU?/ BCM. i cant remember where that leads to on the cobalt
