91 octane benefits?

Hey guys, just wondering if there are any benefits to performance when running 91 octane in a stock 07' SS.

I just had enough 87 in the tank to get me to the station, and since my tank was pretty dry, i figured why not try some 91. I put in a little over half a tank just to test it out.

93 would be even better unless you're like me and can only find 91

the higher the octane the harder is it to burn but you get more energy..

91+ is what the ss s/c is tuned for from the factory.

So after looking through the threads... putting 92 (speedway) in for a stock ss/sc will be fine? I know 93 is what is recommended with stage 2 but I was wondering about stock?

You're not even supposed to put 87 in the 2.4L SS.........definitly not in the SS/SC. I've run 92 in my G5 GT since day one. The computer on the 2.4L does go into low octane mode, which pulls timing to protect the engine, but there definitly would be a power loss.......most likely slightly worse gas mileage as well.

Wrong and wrong... the SS/SC is the only Cobalt that 'recommends' 'premium' (91+) octane fuel in it; and even with the SS/SC, you CAN run 87 all the time if you wish, and the computer will just pull timing automatically.

LMAO, I could go photocopy my damn manual if you really don't believe me. You don't even own a 2.4L so don't come in here spouting your great knowledge on 2.4Ls.

So the 2.4L is factory tuned for 91?

Yes, the 173 hp is with 91 octane fuel. I believe the quote from the manual says "91 octane is highly recommended but not required"

I quoted the manual in a previous post

If the octane is less than 87, you may notice a heavy knocking noise when you drive. IF this occurs, use a gasoline rated at 87 octane or higher as soon as possible."
u can run 87 fine. i recently did it for about a month just to test it out. gas mileage hasn't suffered too much, but u can feel the acceleration difference. it's not too bad, but i wanna tune soon and i want everything where it should be

Jesus, i've been using 87 since we got the thing. I could have sworn the manual says 91+ is only required on the SS/SC, but I guess i am mistaken.

Just did some pulls with 91, and there is a noticeable difference.

Also a 'friend' was also doing the same thing as me, and this 'friend' just installed a ShiftPlus, and let me tell you 91 + ShiftPlus = CRAZY! (compared to 87 and stock)

It says you can use 87 but it will reduce power (ie. pull timing)
