yeah you can take it off. if i remember correctly you push the chrome piece at the bottom of it down and you will see an allen screw in it. loosin that and it will slide off. as far as replacements go you might could make one of the aftermarket ones work but im not sure bout it thou.

if you get somethin to stick directly into the top of the stub thats left after the knob is takin off. the lil stub is hollow like a piece of pipe with another rod in the center of it. the rod gets pushed down when you press the button thats on the knob which releases the shifter to be able to move it from gear to gear. if you can find one of the aftermarket shift knobs that has the button on top of it with the short rod connected to the button then you should be able to make it work. im sure there is a way to rig one up if they dont make em too.

now..i know you can shift the car to reverse from neutral, even while rolling forward (each time i did it, i was going 5ish mph max).

I am sure theres a safety feature that would prevent you to throw it into reverse or park while going fast....but i dont want to be the one to try it out.

I tend to use all of my drive gears (Drive, I & L) when racing/driving....so id hate to be in a gear that i dont think i am...and throw it up into reverse.

after you go past neutral you cant go back to reverse with out pressin the button on the knob. goin from neutral to drive or reverse can be done without pressin it thou. most all vehicles is like that and that is the safty feature.

You've got it right the lower chrome piece slides down -- I find if you twist it slightly while pulling it down it makes it easier, then an allen wrench on the allen screw to remove the knob.

There are several different color combinations, leather, or plastic, available from GM but they all function the same so those probably aren't what you are looking for. If you find an aftermarket knob provide info and pics

you could modify the internals of the shifter its self to make it where to button wouldnt have to be use but i would recomend doin it cuz you could accidently throw it in reverse will drivin. but thats up to you to do. im bout to upload the pics.

ok here are the pics. i couldnt find a allen head to remove it so i use a torx bit that was close in size. hope they're not to small. they was takin wit my phone. you can save em to your computer and make em bigger if you want.

o and dont mind the mess thats around the shifter. i've been workin alot and havent had time to clean it.

im pretty sure the ones with the button on top would work but dont hold me to that. try buyin one of the cheap ones off ebay to see if it will work then you could go from there on gettin a good one that you want.

i dont know which one you have from the factory but mine is the leather wrapped. its not that bad but its not the best lookin or smallest either.
