K&N is an oil filter. Once it is time to clean my Injen I will be switching to the AEM Dry filter. It has the highest claimed air filtration and most conistant flow.

The stocker is nothing to shake a stick at either. I was reading somewhere that an independant company did a comparison of all the different filters for a Duramax online group and determined that the highest most conistant flow and filtration went to the stock filter. The K&N was only higher flowing when clean but let over 3 times more dirt through than the stocker. The stocker was also the highest flowing when dirty and filtered the best.

good luck with aem filters on cold air intakes....
tried that with jbp intake, and got nothing but surging in light rain, wat happned was water would find its way on to the sensitive filter thats really soft and does not have atleast a bit of oil to protect from particles, a drop of water on the filter will cause the motor to surge, so iswapped it out to find out it was soaked after 2 weeks of having this filter on and it allowed water in teh filter through the intake tube i found water spots in the tube aswell..., never had this problem before, only with the aem filter, i drove through alot of heavy rain, but as soon as i put the aem on, issues started. It could just be a light mist and the car would surge, now i have the injen intake with the filter it came with and thats the way its gonna stay.

You're right about water surging - I've had this with other cars. That and hydraulic lock potential is why I'm not a fan of low-mounted CAI. The GMPP, when set up to breathe through the hood, provides cleaner air (it's up off the ground) and I've never had water troubles with mine.

The filters that are foam when they get old break down and the foam chuncks go into the engine, not good!

The best DRY filter I know of is the GMPP filter that comes on the GMPP air intake kit.

A water bypass only works if A) the filter is fully submerged B) the bypass is somewhere it won't get wet and C) before the MAF. Since the MAF is right after the filter the bypass would be after the MAF making the car go into to Power Reduce or "Limp" mode. there is also little to no room to place it with the CAI.

I bought the Injen Dry-lock prefilter when I bought my CAI. I figured an extra $20 is good cheap insurance for my motor from Turbo Tech Racing. It should also fit any filter that is the same size and the Injen filter ie. the AEM 3" x 5" Cone Dry filter. http://www.aempower.com/ViewProduct.aspx?ProductID=826#
