Not to sound like a dick about this but CAIs from my experience are all about the same performance wise untill i see evedence other wise they all net this car roughly 5ish hp to the wheels i payed $280.00 for the gmpp but honestly its no better than the other ones ive seen. As for the K&N i find it very hard to beleive that a cai sucking from an open engine bay is capable of producing 3x the hp of the other intakes on the market. Im guessing that if they ran that on a dyno it was open hood with an ice pack.

For what it's worth, the K&N does have a heat shield to block a lot of the engine bay heat. It gets most of the air from the fender opening.

Maybe.... but if it is, its somehow defying the laws of physics. What all the experts miss is the under hood temperature of a moving car is a lot cooler than one sitting on a static dyno. Even the GM "engineers" say there's little difference in IATs of CAI and SRI engines.

The standard in-fender silencer or CAI does pull cooler air initially in a stopped vehicle. Yes the SRI initially pulls in hot air but the IATs begin to drop as the engine starts sucking air at up to 240 Cubic Feet per Minute.

The K&N (and other) SRIs are tuned so that the sonic (negative) pulse help ram air into the cylinders as a result of the intake tube length vs diameter ratio. The SRI does have a better low end response as the result of less resistance to air flow in a relatively large diameter shorter tract.

And by the way the K&N folks claim that 16 HP increase shown on their dyno chart to be done "Closed Hood"http://www.kandn.com/dynocharts/69-4517.pdf
Note that there may be an extra 100-200 RPM at which the K&N is rated 165.53 HP over the earlier stock reading of 149.59 HP.

you have to understand how they rate the gain here.

lets prentend that the black line is the normal horsepower curve.

the red line is the exact same curve with five more HP. you can see that the car makes more power through out the powerband (as if you added some compression)

the blue line is the car's power after we install "xxxxx super performance JDM hop up part".

now, in this case, the car loses power throughout most of the power band, but at one point, it is greatly higher than it was. they will measure that gain, and not mention the rest. now, look at the K&N graph and you'll see how they "gained" 16hp. really, it's more like 4 overall, but at one point, there is a pretty healthy gain.

Anyone who has a Dashhawk or similar device will know the real results of how "cold" the air going into the intake is. On my Dashhawk, while the car is moving, the IAT is the same exact temperature as the outside air temperature........what more can you ask for? Yes, at a stop, the IAT does rise significantly, but when you're not moving......who cares? I seriously doubt that a CAI will bring in air colder than the outside air temperature......I'm pretty sure that's impossible.

while not impossible, it would be sort of dumb, because it would take a lot of energy to make the air colder, FAR more than the amount that would be gained.

let's pretend you actually read K&N's horsepower claims. from 3500 to 5000 rpm i see at least a 5 hp gain. then from 5000 rpm on I see 10+ hp, including the peak of 16 hp all the way to redline. am i tripping on acid or did anyone else actually read the dyno chart?

Is it possible to do both at the same time?

that sounds about right. as RPM increase, you'll see more of a gain as you go, this is about the same gain you'd get from most intake kits for most cars.

Sounds good, looks good, wont void your warranty and you'll feel a nice increase in power.
It doesn't void the warrenty? I always thought it did.

While there is a law (can't remember the name) that says aftermarket parts cannot void a warranty -- it is the dealers call. Note that in the factory service manual it tells the technicain to look for any aftermarket device that could be a service call problem. If the dealer makes the call that the item you have installed is causing the problem then they can refuse the warranty work and document this. Then you can try to fight it.... All depends on your dealer and how they look at your modding. Some are tolerant and others aren't.

magnason-moss act.

basically, it says that your warranty cannot be voided for using aftermarket parts, however, that law was written so that the car makers couldn't void your warranty because you used a fram filter as opposed to a OEM, or something like that. it does NOT mean that you can jsut mod at will.

i just made my own CAI and it only cost $70 bucks and 1 hour of work
50=K&n Drop in filter
20=Spector intake tube
works just as good as the rest and no CEL and looks stock, no red flags at the dealerships

i went with the GMPP intake and let me tell you...the sound of the engine is night and day! the thing screams inside and outside of the car and adds a semi noticeable amount of power...you can't ask for something thats going to make your car "faster" because the difference of just an intake is not very significant however i think its well worth the money to get the GMPP because its factory installed, covered under warranty and the deal can't give you **** if somthing goes wrong because it would technically be their fault.

Many go with GMPP, but some then switch to the Injen Brand intake and state the quality and performance is much better.

Im willing to bet its 2 things.

1. GMPP filter is crappy. easily fixed with a hi flow after market cone
2. Still sucking air through the intake muffler. Easily fixed via removing it.
