Unhappy Did i just lower performance?!

hey, so today i was just at a shop putting in a cherrybomb glasspack (bigger dimensions than stock exhaust), its slightly bigger than the stock exhaust, this one has a inlet of 2.5 and an outlet of 2.5 as opposed to the 2 1/4" of the stock muffler. so half way putting it in, i started a conversation with a mechanic there and he started rambling to me about how by putting on the bigger straighter design, im losing a large amount of fuel economy and that i am losing ALOT of horsepower, he then started suggesting all these other mufflers. i became very distraught and now am worried if i have lost all that power and fuel economy... any inputs? (i only put this in temporarily because i eventually want to replace the whole exhaust system)

Simply put, hes an idiot. sure if you put a 3 inch full exhaust with no mufflers, you would lose some performance down low but swapping out a muffler wont hurt anything, especially 2.5 inch. Most aftermarket exhausts are 2.5 inch for these cars

Having a glasspack in place of your stock muffler is a bad idea because its gunna make your car very loud and yes your gunna loose low end tq and hp. You should chop that off right now and buy this muffler. You can also get this muffler from speedy muffler thats where I bought my dynomax muffler from. Also what other mods do you have?

hes an idiot, it wont hurt performance since most exhausts are 2.5" for cobalts anyways, 3" is overkill

so im getting a bit confused because i guess some people seem to think it wont change anything and some people say i will lose power, i also considered the cherrybomb turbo, but theyre 2 1/4" and i heard theyre not very loud at all. so if im losing power and MPG am i losing a significant amount?

the loss of gas mileage will be negligible. i really dont even think youll have any loss in mileage. i ran my balt open downpipe for a while because i gimped up my catback. dont think i lost any mileage to tell you the truth

Why not just take the exhaust off and run open downpipe? That should give you sound.

my exhaust shop told me my catless downpipe and flow through muffler would kill my turbo due to lack of backpressure. I asked them If they ever worked on a turbo car. They said no. I just laughed and told them to install it anyways.

omg another backpressure debate. It has everything to do with flow velocity, and how combustion works.

If you replace with a bigger muffler (bigger inlet and outlet) than it doesn't effect your performance as much if you replaced say the beginning of a cat-back and dp. the harder the piston needs to push out the exhaust the harder it comes down, if you think about it, it makes total sense on how it would effect your high and low end power.

OP you are fine stop being scared by homos

The muffler will not effect anything. Nothing at all. Zero difference besides being obnoxiously loud. You still have a 2 1/4 exhaust. You *may* have increased your exhaust flow by a VERY small amount, but it isn't going to be enough to change backpressure enough to effect anything.

I had a similar situation with a "mechanic" friend. He told me to stop putting premium gas in my 2.4 because he said it was designed for 87 only (despite the fact that I told him I felt a difference). Turns out the manual said the exact opposite of what he said. Lesson I learned: sometimes the best judge is yourself (and sometimes the manual.)
