A few synthetic questions...

Hey guys.

I replaced my oil with synthetic about a week ago for my oil change. Valvoline SynPower for now. But I've got a few questions.

1. Am I really supposed to be able to notice a difference? Still feels about the same. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to notice anything different or not.

2. Will synthetic void any sort of warranty? lol. I wouldn't really figure it would...

3. Can you convert back to regular oil down the road if you want to?

4. When you go to trade the car back in at the end of a lease (if we don't keep it), will the dealership be mad that I put synthetic in if you can't convert back to regular? lol.

Thanks guys.

Excellent. So to convert back, I don't need to do anything other than just drain and refull like normal?

^^ Me too, but I'll take whatever I can get. I'd really rather not spend the extra cash if not completely nescessary. The 93 already adds a little.

Hey one more question on synthetic. How long can i run without an oil change. Ive been told in the past that synthetic is good for like 10k miles before it need to be changed again. Is that true?

So that's approximately how much past the oil life monitor in the DIC?

I'm not sure, because the SS/SC is programmed for synthetic.
Its been so long since I owned my base balt that I dont remember how quickly I got to 15%.

On that note, there are some synthetics that will go 15k miles I believe, but you have to buy that specifically.

Not all synthetics will, and to be honest, I wouldnt feel too comfortable going that long without changing.

different oils are good for different mileages, but trouthfully I wouldn't go more then 7k myself. most synthetic oils begin to lose the ability to properly lubricate once you start going past 7k. I usually do about 6k (which is what the DIC usually tells me) just to be safe.

The oil life monitor is variable - it changes based on many different things including how hard you drive it and how hot the engine gets.

see thats what i saw..there was a synthetic that claimed it could go for 15k miles. ive changed mine every 8-10k since i had the car so i should be in the clear. Ive been using Quaker State Q so im sure that it can handle at least 8k.

Thanks for the info guys

Why would you convert back?? Synthentic oil is superior in the fact that it has a longer life than standard motor oil and prevents wear on your motor over time. My first oil changed I used Castrol Syntec synthetic, and my second oil change I used Mobil 1 synthetic. Oil change #3 is coming up next week, and once again I plan on using synthetic, likely Mobil 1. You won't see any performance gains from it, but you will see a longer engine life in the long run.

doesn't make a difference... you can switch back... a synthetic oil change costs me 33 total instead of 25. (i do it myself) well worth the extra 8 dollars in my opinion.

i would still change it aroudn 7,000 or so... the reason being is that even though the oil may still be ok, the filter probably needs a change.

as far as noticing a difference, you really shouldn't. some oils claim to give you an extra 1 or 2 hp with synthetic, but there's no way you can feel a difference of 1 hp.

I went to Royal Purple on my first change. I never used it in anything before.

I'm not bs-ing....my mpg went up from getting about 31-32 on the highway to getting about 34. I sometimes get 35 and 36 on long stretches.

I drive to Houston and back every other weekend (about 370 miles round trip, and I do this twice, so about 750 total) so I'm not just guessing at it.

And I've put about 5k on since putting it in and I still have the increase...so it wasn't just a "lucky" trip.

Performance wise, I dunno....it gets up and go's as fast as it ever did.
