Full Catback Exhaust or New Muffler??
Hey, I have been thinking about changing out my exhaust system, but at the same time I have also wondered if I just switch out the muffler for a magnaflow street or race series muffler. I am looking for a little performance gain, but overall a nice sound. Any suggestions?

most people will say just put a new muffler on it...i say you are better off to buy the whole cat back because not only do you get a better sound you also get bigger piping encase you decide to go any form of FI...which is necessary...it just all depends on hopw much your willing to spend...CORSA makes a nice one for about 650 shipped from ttr

I'd say replace the full Cat. back, there should be a big differance in gains.
as for size it really depends on how much air you'll think you'll be displacing.
for the LSJ crowed it's been pretty much decided that there isn't much to be gained from an exhaust as big as 3", unless you plan on making a lot of power.
so most people are sticking with the 2.5".
I'd imagine the same goes with the LE5

good catch I didn't even relize my brain fart .
a 3" will most likely be louder, as for which sounds better, it's a matter of taste, and the way it's made.
all the aftermarket exhaust sound different to eachother,

Tomorrow I am getting my exhaust installed. It's the same Borla system that was installed on my buddy's Mercedes the other day. The exhaust is basically the same set up. I'm getting a new cat and removing the resinator. And then everything back will all new, except the tip. Cause I love the look of mine. His motor is a 2.3L, but his is also "kompressed." I should get similar results. I'll prolly get a sound clip on here for you guys sometime shortly after. Oh yeah...all of this installed+tax for $225, at a really acclaimed exhaust shop here in town!

hm i didnt even know an exhaust had an o2 sensor... i just figured they were on intakes only....the 3.0 will sound louder...i think it mostly depends on the type of muffler you get...and wether or not its touring or sport...

24ss: the stock setup is mandible bent 2.5" up to the end of the res. really your not gaining anything from a catback except a big heavy stainless steel shiny pipe. cut the pipe where it funnels down to 2.25, replace the pipe and muffler and use the other 500 you saved for a CAI or something useful...
or on the other hand, maybe you live in a place that they salt the roads a shitload, and you need the $700 worth of stainless... in that case i would rent a uhaul and move somewhere that doesnt suck.

If you are going turbo, bigger is going to be better. I would recommend just getting the muffler right now if thats all you really want to do because if you do go f/i you arent going to see great gains from just having wider piping from the last cat back, you are going to want 3" all the way thru, or close to it.
