higher gear then shifting to I?

so can I do this? let's say I'm driving 60 or so and the gear already has passed 2nd can I slow down to 30-40 and put it in I or whatever? to bring it down to 2nd gear and do a roll race? when would I shift to regular drive if I was able to do this and began the racing

damn automatic people trying to pretend they have a standard. You can but the lag in the shift from I to D will be horrible

If I remember right the car will actually shift at a slightly higher rpm when in L. You can hold the gear for a bit longer in L or I but at a certain rpm the car will go ahead and shift anyway. But dont quote me on this.

And roll racing in d is retarded... the amount of time the computer takes to decide to downshift pretty much means youve lost the race before you start it.

And op when do you shift? When your close to redline

not pretending I have a manual cuz I don't. in another thread I made exsoccer told me that he launches in low then goes to third or something like that in his auto impala I think. just thought maybe this would be the same thing and t would let me be in 2nd gear so that I could be at the best place for power at that speed

yeah that's what I was meaning. being able to downshift myself instead of waiting for the comp to do it would be way better for me. I was hoping mindrot would jump in here cuz I know he experimental a lot with launching and the gearing

oh and I haven't experimented yet. I was thinking of reacting at like 6k rpms then throwing it into d since mindrot said he does something like that from 1st to 2nd

Ive messed with this alot on mine (however am no expert)

L will hold in 1st and 2nd to the computer set redline at approx 6700-6800 but hit that in L in 2nd and it bounces off the rev limiter... However the shift from 1st to 2nd feels like it has a shift kit

I will do similar, feels like a shift kit when shifting. At normal driving my car in I shifts from 2nd to 3rd about 40-42 mph and from 3rd back to 2nd about 40-38 mph. If your in I doing 40-60 in 3rd and floor it, the car downshifts kind of violently and will act kind of weird for a second or two.

If you want to do a roll race I would say to go from 30-35 in I and punch it (that way your in second and at the begining of the power band. I will hold the tranny in 3rd (after shifting from 2nd) which is 1:1 and hold without shifting into OD. This will hold you up to a bit over 100 if not more depending on the car. If I remember correctly I didn't shift to D until 110-115 to make the OD kick in as ive had mine up to 125 and the stock governor will kick in at 128.

If your going from a stop, using L will be your best friend and preload the suspension with left foot on the brake to give you an optimal launch. Wait for 2nd to get up over 6500 and shift into I and you should be good to go from there.

Hopefully this helps but then again every car is different. I will hold until redline as long as your in WOT, anything less will shift at lower shift points.

I see so basically I can use I from 30-35 until like 100 then shift into D?

Can i have been going like 60 then slow down to 30-35 and put it into I so that i can do the roll race?

Personally if your doing 60 I would just downshift into I and slow down slowly just until the car downshifts into 2nd. I manually shift mine like that all the time and constantly use shifting between I and D on the freeway getting in and out of traffic. (I miss having a stick )

unless you have an awefully long or high speed race, I wouldn't even worry about shifting out of I into D

Though now looking at your sig that S/C may get you there quick enough you'll need D once you hit redline in 3rd in I

I go from 30-120 in 3 seconds....lmfao

ok got it I should probably shut down before 120 anyways because of bad tires.

So I cant slow down before and then shift it into I? Wouldnt that make it go into 2nd?

You can downshift whenever you want, thats just personal preference I guess. I downshift at 70-80 all the time. You shouldn't hurt anything whether its at 70 or at 30.... I think. I dont know much about how the S/C effects everything.

Just go out and play with it a bit and find what feels right for you

nope, it will deffinitely shift into 3rd on its own. Try going out into town and take it up slow starting in I and see how and where it shifts at. My guess would be itll shift into 2nd around 15-20 mph and then hold 2nd until 40-42 mph before it goes into 3rd. It will absolutely go into third though on its own, I will just keep it out of OD.

If you roll race at say 35ish and put it into Intermediate then it will downshift into 2nd gear. That is ideal since it takes TIME for the car to downshift by flooring it in drive. Not sure why some of you people are saying to "drive it like an automatic".

"I" gear is good till the end of 3rd gear which is about 120mph. This will hold 2nd will 4k RPMs unless more throttle is applied. It will drop to 2nd around 40mph.

"L" gear is good till the end of 2nd hear which is about 75mph. It will also shift early out of first gear. It will drop to 1st gear around 32mph.

I downshift to do a race. Always to "L" unless we drop around 35mph then its "I" so i dont catch 1st gear.

If your trans isnt tuned, get it done. Whole different world.
