how is this possible

Ok so I went to the track tonight and my best run was a 13.8@105mph 60ft was 2.4. My friend drives a 2002 cavalier L61(5spd) turboed with a volvo turbo(td04h) and runs a flat 15.0
I have a LE5 automatic with a precision 5557s. So on the track he stands no chance....

but....

On the highway its a different story when we do 60mph rolls he pulls away and at about 85mph I start to creep up on him. Then he hits his governor at 110 and then I fly by. I believe if his governor is removed I would still creep up on him and still win but barely.

So my question is how is it possible that I'm barely beating this guy? I'm leaning towards the transmission since he is 5spd, and I'm auto.

Yup. Its the transmission. I had a similar situation happen with 2 friends of mine. One drives a 2.2 cobalt sedan 5 speedand the other used to drive a 2.4 cobalt ss automatic. They ran from a 40 roll and the 2.2 won by a car length. The only reasonable explenation is he won because of the 5 speed vs auto.

F23 has pretty short gears, top of 4th is around 117, they are quick but once you hit 5th gear there's nothing left.

What was his trap speed at the track? THAT'S the most important thing to consider when discussing roll racing.

You may run a 13.8@105 therefore beating him at the track... but if he's running a 15.0@110, then he's going to win the roll race.

LOL! He sucks at the track... or you suck at roll racing. Probably the later. That speed probably isn't a good starting point. I'm guess you dropped down to 3rd gear instead of 2nd gear. Brake boost? If he did and you didn't... that's another advantage to him.

People think roll racing is as easy as slamming the gas and going... but there are a lot of factors that play into whether you win or not.

Which is why you lost. Not because you have an auto trans, but because you think all you have to do is push the gas when it's go time. More than likely he brake boosted and you didn't, which explains why he would shoot forward right off the bat.

Each gear top mph will change with adjustments in rev limit/shift point, and tire size.
