I had my g5 gt in L gear today for the first time. The car flew off the line and spun tires like crazy but I also forgot to upshift through the rest of the gears so i just let off the gas and stopped on the side of the road and put it back in drive. Like everybody said just keep it in drive for regular driving.

According to your sig. It shows you have an LS. Maybe thats why. You have a 2.2 instead of the awsome 2.4 which everyone else has..... JK but seriously, i think it is cause of the motor difference

the 2.2 goes to redline in first, shifts to second and if the 2.4 is getting cut off at 73 and i know for a fact many times over that the 2.2 will hit 80 before doing its bounce off the wall thing. if you want to avoid this and it will save you alot of time shift about 10mph before the shift because if you wait to late it will still do it. this happenend to me at the track it cost me about half a second.

L does nothing for performance--it just turns the traction control off. I just gives you a little engine braking.

it turns off TC and lets you rev higher in the power band in that sence yes it does do somthing for your performance. Dosent net you more poneys but it is a quicker ride than letting the auto do it its self.

I also have a Saturn VUE 3.5 Liter V6 250 horse/ 250 ftlbs and I always thought it was a little doggy for the power it had. When in L it shifted at a measely 5500 and dropped itself out of VTEC (HONDA V6).
Then I stumbled across the secret to GMs tranny. If you leave it in L or I. It doesn't shift any different than if it were doing it itself.
However, when you manually shift it, you're able to bring the V6 up to 6500rpm (Only in 2nd gear) if you time it right. Too late, and you'll bounce the limiter
Launch in "L," to defeat traction control shift into "I." By shifting into "I" you allow the car to shift into 2nd with a higher redline (6000rpm in 1st gear for the VUE) higher for a Cobalt for anyone trying it. IF you leave it in "L" for the 1-2 shift, it will shift at a much lower RPM unless you are tuned (DanSpec).
Once in 2nd gear (after it shifts) , drop the shifter back into "L" again, hold it to almost redline and shift into "I" once again. It should shift right around (6500rpm for the VUE) and drops me into 3rd gear VTEC...well no VTEC for cobalts but the change in accerlation times are AMAZING.
Just some tibits to helop autos without tune. Hope it helps.

yeh Id rather GO L first and halfway through secound and hit *I* to 3rd then D then a nice drop back to *I* will boost ur rpms back up and gain somenice speed then loosin her up backinto D, Try Shifting from D to I while for slowwing down also/when it hits 35 its a real hard down shift btw, all this is old news but staying L to 75 probally not as good as an idea
