The purpose of the option b is to continually bleed air. Its not something you can bleed once a week.

As for the tank itself, I have seen tons of nice looking aluminum tanks that can be used like one. Has feed at bottom, bleeder on top. Bunch of different shapes.

I do know ho cramped they are. One of my buddies cars is an auto that's I did the m62 swap on. There is definitely enough room for both pheonlic spacers to fit.

Good grab on the fans and h/e. Good look with your progress. I'll definitely be seeing how it all comes together and the final product. I love sc's and the hhr also, makes a nice combo.

Again, I KNOW what the "option b" tank is for.

And I am already looking into tanks like these to Try figuring out a install method that looks good under the hood or to be honest, it can just get left out until something suitable is figured out. An Upgrade Later on if need be.

Guys have run their SC setups without one and added it Later if they felt the need to do so.
Heck I have seen guys say they are running without a HE, saying they will be getting one soon.

Same with the pheonlic spacer, the Auto HHR is even Tighter than the Auto Cobalt. AFTER my install, IF I see enough room and heat soak is giving me troubles, I can add it on as a Later Upgrade, Not investing in it now, only to find out it won't fit. Then end up selling for a loss.

Good news is yesterday the HHR SS front pillars arrived. Only using the drivers side one for the gauge pod for my Glow Shift Boost gauge.
Happy I was finally able to get them.

Eventually I will Upgrade all the plumbing for my SC install to real braided stainless steel hoses and AN fittings. That'll be Next years Project after all this install and tuning is dialed in. And All the plumbing is sorted out of course.

A little update, had set a date of Jan 11th to get started at my buddies shop.

But I am thinking I am gonna hold that off until the last week of February. We haven't been hit with much snow at all yet here, but as soon as I start we will be, that's always been my luck.

We can see alot of snow in Jan/Feb and on up into March. At this point i'd rather wait the bulk on Winter out so once everything is installed I can actually drive the car and get the Tune dialed in without having to let my car sit a month for snow and salt to clear off the roads.

I know myself, and i'd be tempted to take her out on the snow trying to dial in the Tuning and them have to deal with all the damn Salt damage in the spring Detailing the car back to show ready. I HATE that damn SALT!

I have a wake and funeral to attend on the 12th so that puts a hold on my plan on starting on the 11th anyways.

Good luck with everything, can't wait to see the results.

My Cobalt is about to become my winter beater. Am considering a Sonic RS for a summer daily (will be modified immediately) or couple other vehicles.

I'm also considering saving some money and picking up an HHR and doing something similar to ZZP's Stage 2 SC...power wise...not as much as you're doing, but still somewhere around 250whp maybe a little better.

I'm looking at HHR 2.4l manuals if I go this route. Otherwise possibly another Cobalt sedan (manual, but probably an LT so I can have some power options.)...then I can do everything the right way on that car and keep it stored in winter because of the damn snow/salt/sand here as well. I had bigger hopes for this Cobalt but being auto and being my DD and having a son who's not even 5 yet...the car isn't in very great shape anymore.

I've got until April or so to figure out exactly what I'm doing, but so many options...

Again, nice job so far (collecting everything and what not) and good luck in Feb.

Question

Think this one could be used as a Option B Tank?

A power steering fluid reservoir will not work as it is vented. You need an expansion tank such as this one Canton Racing Coolant Expansion Fill Tanks 80-202 - SummitRacing.com. You have to be able to pressurize the tank, but also allow it to relief if you get above approx 15 PSI.

I know that you have delayed your installation, but I started on mine this week. I started on Sunday and spent that entire day doing disassembly. Monday I started on modifications to the head to clear the tensioner and engine lift hook. I spent a large part of the day also cleaning the parts to be installed as I did not do that previously. Tuesday I started fitting the intake manifold, lower manifold bracket, inter cooler pump, dip stick tube and alternator. I am using an original after cooler as well as a FMAC, so I had to build out the radiator-after cooler-A/C condenser assembly. I am going a little further than most as I am converting over to a complete 6 rib belt set up. Today I worked on wiring and plumbing for after coolers, pump etc.

Don't let anyone fool you, this is a large job made of many compromises. So far I am pretty satisfied with the only compromises are the IC pump bracket should bolt to the oil pan, but only the LSJ pan has that boss. I contemplated drilling and tapping my head for 8mm bolts instead of the LE5 6mm bolts, but decided to leave it at 6mm.

Thanks for the reply. Thought maybe it could be Adapted into one. The Cobalt one (that I currently do have btw) just has a screw on top and a small hole in it.

So I found the Moroso 63766 Universal Expansion Tank, it's 1-1/4" quart capacity tank. Has a regular radiator cap fill neck.

Hopefully I can fit it in easier than the Cobalt tank most use. Amazon had one in their warehouse deals section they claim there is a scratch on the bottom for about half price, will be here on Saturday.

Yeah I put my SC install on temporary hold, were in the teens temp wise and yesterday was a high of Zero for the day. Thankfully we still havent had much snow at all so far this winter, a dusting of it yesterday.

I know it's a large job, I am also swapping out my head for a ported one with the ZZP Cams, and I too am converting to all 6 rib pullies.

Congrats on starting your sc project.

Should be lots of Fun once installed.

That expansion tank should work just fine. According to their description it has two NPT fittings on it. One on the bottom where you will install a 1/2"NPT to 3/4"Hose barb and on the side is a 3/8"NPT bung to install a 3/8"NPT to 1/4"Hose barb to connect to the after cooler.

Now back to work on the car...

Just gotta order up a Moroso radiator cap for it. And get a couple barbed fittings or AN fittings for braided hoses.

This WILL be my "option b" tank.

Should look much better than just trying to shove the Cobalt tank in someplace.

Question Dual Fans Pigtail Harness

Question, The Dual Fans on the Cobalt SS have 2 electrical plugs (3 prong).

Since I bought the oem intercooler I grabbed the fans the seller had with it.

The HHR only has a single fan, still unsure if I can even swap the fans, as the HHR has a fill tank up front, it would have to be moved/modified or another fill tank bought from some other car.

Won't know what exactly I will do up untill I have the HHR all torn down to figure it all out.

But, either way I would like to locate the wiring harness to the dual fans off a Cobalt SS, I imagine the 2 plug ends are wired together going into one lead into the harness?

Anyone have one laying around?

hmmmmmmmmmmm,
I looked at NAPA's listing and what you say seems odd for what I found for cooling fan motor connector.

I have the dual fan setup sitting here next to me, there are definately 3 prongs in each, if all 3 in each are needed I don't know.

I'd like to pick up a factory harness section to tap into my single fans harness.

I guess your correct Cherry GT. Halfcent posted some pics and they only have 2 wires each coming off the plugs.

Still wanting a section of harness for these fans.

Anything new with this build Panel Man?

I'm doing a full 2.4 build similar to this and just got started. Headers/down/kept stock back half and muffler. Cams are going in next week(possibly heads). Brembos up front/tires/wheels. Clutch/flywheel/engine and tranny mounts. Possibly LSD. Then SC Stage 2. Also did suspension mods struts/shocks/front-rear sways.

Will post full thread with pics here and over at the HHR site(same name there). Hope to share some info and experiences soon.

I just did my 2.4 SC conversion a few weeks ago, and learned alot along the way.

YES. the LSJ Heat exchanger and rad fans are a direct bolt-on. currently your setup goes like this:
Rad fan->radiator->ac condenser
in the LSJ Setup, it goes like this:
Rad Fan->radiator->heat exchanger->ac condenser

Since the 2.4's have the same rad, naturally it bolts up. its a bit tricky lining up the tabs and stuff, and your ac condenser has to be really straight, because it butts right against the H/E.

I had some good resources at school for figuring out the detail, and Thought they would be helpful to you guys.

it has tons of info on connectors, wiring, and diagrams of every kind.

If it aint one thing it's another, a death in my family postponed starting. Then my shop owners mother in law passed away, she lived in Las Vegas, so he has been flying out on the weekends to help his wife go through the house and take care of all the things that need to be done. So i'm just waiting on all the family business to be taken care of.

My SC project can wait, I just keep polishing and reading. No hurry.

Recently I was testing out my older XP laptop to find out the 2 batteries I had for it were Both pretty weak, only lasting about 30 minutes each. Not good.

I don't use the laptop much just keep it plugged in on the living room coffee table , if I wanna hit the web while watching TV.

I was gonna use it as my Tuning device, I had already put HP Tuners Pro on it. Glad I decided to Unplug the laptop and Test the battery life Before Bricking Morticia's computer.

So I have been wanting to replace my older laptop but did not want to buy one for 300-600.00 bucks when I just don't use it all that often. I'll keep the XP laptop plugged in on the table until it dies.
XXL posted a Dell Inspiron Mini 1012 10" mini notebook computer in the classifieds. He used it for Tuning with HP Tuners.

Perfect timing for XXL to put his Dell up for sale I was getting ready to just go buy a new laptop that I didn't want to buy but Had to to move on with my performance mods. Nice and small with a 10 inch screen for sitting in the HHR data logging.

This little Windows 7 Dell machine I bought was reasonably priced (150.00 Shipped) for a Dedicated Tuning Machine, all I will use it for is HP Tuners Pro Tuning Morticia. Nice Long battery life too.

I am Swapping my OEM Head with the Cammed Ported Head I bought from hhrfreek.

Bottom end is staying stock, unless/until I blow it up. I'm not too worried about it tho, she's my Toy not my needed daily driver.

Morticia was pretty much Parked all winter, I took her out a couple times when the streets were totally Dry just to keep things lubed up.

I read your now going with a turbo, good luck and have Fun with that install.

Thanks for the info, How did you wire in the Dual Fans? My HHR is an Auto Trans, so the 2.4 sits tilted forward compared to the manual trans.

I've got a 5 speed cobalt sedan, and there was no clearance issues. But the LSJ guys that helped me said I have a lot less space between my manifold and the fan shroud.
The stock fan plug uses all 3 prongs in the connector:
Fan voltage 1, fan voltage 2, and ground.
The LSJ plugs have 3 prongs each, but only use the two outside prongs.
On the wiring diagram it said for one connector it was fan voltage 1 and ground, and the other was fan voltage 2 and low reference.
So I got both of the LSJ plugs and connected the voltages respectively, and the ground and low ref together.
It seems to be working fine. At 90* C one fan kicks in, and at 96*C the second kicks in.

I moved most of the parts over to my buddies shop last week.

I'm just putting the finishng touches on the M-62 this week and hopefully we can get started very soon without anything else happening that postpones this project.

I'll do a Final buff, polishing, then a wax and i'm Done with it.

I hope to finish up the M-62 this weekend. And save my stock tune as a starting point and a safe place to get back to stock should I ever decide to go back.

Then start some practice logging in HPT and get this **** done.
