Need help choosing MUFFLER

Today I went to my local muffler shop and they will replace the over the axle piece with mandrel-bent tubing and install a muffler for $ 120 bucks.

I already have K&N RAI and Vibrant Header and D/P. So I want something that will sound deep and smooth, but I don't want it to be loud. I'm trying to keep my car a sleeper so I want it to be barely louder than stock when I'm cruising but loud when I'm at WOT. What is the best choice of muffler that has good performance gains (I'm getting a tune in the spring) and sounds good?

Is an 18" muffler about the longest that will fit?
Some guys have said "Turbo" mufflers offer a nice sound and not too loud.

Thanks

Peter

Get the dynomax super turbo muffler you will not regret it. I'm very pleased with the sound it gives. Its louder than stock but not by much and when cruising its perfect because you don't get that typical drone sound from a magnaflow muffler. The part number for the dynomax is 17733, I bought mine from speedy muffler but you buy it online also.

right now i am testing the flowmaster hushpower db series and it is the deepest ive heard on the balt. it has a nice tone at all rpms. it does get a little raspy but not as bad as the magnaflow i replaced it with.

That has only a 14" case. It will be too loud paired with my headers and downpipe.

Won't it be really loud without a resonator though?

You can get them to add in a resonator.

I have the 5x8 Borla from Mandrel systems, its too loud for my taste, I like a quite system or close to it as possible. I am working against this being catless and supercharged, but I do have the 18in magnaflow resonator on too.....The borla has a nice growl/deepness to it, but the highway drone can get annoying especially if you already have a headache lol.....I plan on putting the ss/tc muffler on, its 2.5 at the opening and exit, I think the larger resonator box it has will calm it down some...Just need to get my welder out of storage and I will know how it sounds.... Good luck.

Megan sounds nice but the 4.5'' outlet is a little ugly.

Mine is loud imo and im on stock 2.2 header +dp. I like the sound though. Each time I look at my exhaust I think of the smiley that pukes green.

Full Catbacks are above my budget, I like supporting my local businesses, and shipping adds up when you live in Alberta. So anything more than fixing the 2.25" reduction and stock muffler is just splitting hairs, right?
And If i need a resonator, this:
***Used Magnaflow Resonator 2.5''/2.5'' - Strathcona County Other Parts, Accessories For Sale - Kijiji Strathcona County Canada.

Do you have a vid or sound clip for it?

You don't need a new resonator keep the stock one as its nice and long and it'll keep the rasp down. Just make sure that the exhaust shop is not giving you crushed bent piping to replace the 2.25 section of your exhaust. I actually bought the cti 2.5 inch axel back kit it was 95 bucks plus shipping.

Nice vid. sounds good at idle, but kinda rough at higher revs.
are you catted and/or resonated ?

My muffler shop has a mandrel bender and they'll use aluminized steel.
They charge $4 per foot of tubing and 1 hours worth of labor for the shaping and install.
He said it would be about $90-95 dollars.

And also, he kept telling me to get a clamp around the muffler body and he would weld the hangars to that. I looked under my car and it appears that the stock hangars are placed well before and behind the muffler itself? NOTE: he did not see my car so is he wrong?

I looked at your other vids on photobucket and you do mention that you're catless,
I think its exactly what i'm looking for. Thanks for the advice.

Thats actually another member on this site, but your right his car is catless so it does make it a tad raspy at wot. However i have a catted downpipe and theres no rasp so make sure your catted and you'll be good to go. Your really lucky you got a place that'll give you mandrel bent piping. I only have crush bent where i live so the cti kit was the best option for me. I'll probably do a vid once the weather gets better around here. As far as muffler hangers i'm not sure what you mean, the only thing i did was i got the exhaust shop to cut the extender piece and stock tip off the oem muffler and weld that onto the dynomax muffler that made everything line up nicely. If you look back on that vid i posted at the end of the vid the guy does a close up of the stock piece welded to the dynomax muffler.

UPDATE:

So I went and bought the Dynomax 17733 Super turbo muffler today for $70 at my local parts store. hopefully tomorrow I can find time to go to the muffler shop to book an appointment to have it installed, along with the custom tubing.

I'll try and post pics (and maybe a vid) when everything is done.

You'll really like it man trust me, especially when you just wanna cruise and won't have to worry about a loud exhaust sound coming from your vehicle.

If it's still too loud try adding another resonator. I just bought a 3" stainless catback (well, turboback when I get that in) from ZZP with a XR-1 borla. Should sound good when I get everything in.
