you can take it out. won't really improve much, but will be slightly better. also will be a little louder. butt dyno says it moves a little more, not sure as far as hp though. i wouldn't expect more than 1 or 2 hp though.

It's very easy removal. The car will show a little performance in the mid to higher RPM. The sound is much deeper in the exhaust and yes you can even hear the wind sucking through the filter. You can also use a high flow filter like K&N to make things even better. Think of this as the cheap man's Intake. I'd say like 5HP or a little more. Definetaly worth your time if you are strapped for cash for a CAI.

ok but i know that this is the main air flow from the eyelid threw the 3inch opening, passing the silencer to the bottom of the filter, so with this removed how is air gettin to it? and wont water splash up and hit the filter, because the plastic is muddy so that must mean mud gets up there

Do a search on 2.2 intake mod. there is even a couple how-to's on it.

I took mine out. There is nice deep growl in the 3000-3800 RPM range. swear it has a lil more pick up. I like it. One guy even made some piping to route air in from the outside.

I would do it if you just want a nice free mod... but I wouldn't expect much gain

No, it opens to a huge compartment that you are pulling air in from. if you have foglights (even if not) there is a ton of air getting there and you are no longer limiting it to where the air comes from near the headlight. mud wont get up cuz the bumper has a plastic guard down there.

Enjoy. Most people do. I also enjoyed a little better gas mileage.

You might be talking about me, I made a post about it, and I think there are pics if you click on my camera by my name. The reason I did it is because if you just take out the silencer tehre is a gap that warm air could come in, so I jsut pieced together some abs pipe to go to the space behind the headlight

I took off my bumper first (because I hit a sign and needed to put on the new one) and then took out the intake silencer thing. All I have to say is, who the hell thought of putting this retarded ass piece of **** in our cars? Less weight, more flow, smile on my face.

Heh i went ahead and did this mod havent tested it yet but I just went to grizzly industrial and ordered some 3" hose for a dust collector and some clamps im gonna turn that fog light scoop into a ram air scoop. Ill update on that after ive done it. Ive done similar on a few other cars and generally net 5 - 12 poneys. I however Recently got my Gtec ganked so youll have to wait till i can get another measuring device for real numbers.

the 5-12 is from ram air not the silencer just a clairifying statement to ward off forum trolls.
