Rotors, Steering Shaft, Or Other?
Okay, I've been googling and searching the forums all day and there is quite a bit of back and forth over the issue I'm having. I have steering wheel shimmy under braking but everyone once in a great while there is a some while driving, but only for a moment. I personally replaced my front rotors and pads (r1 concepts slotted/crossdrilled and low dust pads) about a year and a half ago. Alignments have done no good, had wheels balanced with last alignment and no change. Tires are worn evenly and at proper PSI, so I'm essentially at a loss. Would this be related to any of the steering components or would do you think its all my rotors?

i have been battleing this issue on my cobalt aswell for some time now..
but mine doesnt shake all time. when applying the brake it will shake some at high speeds and sometimes at 35-40 normal speeds but, if i brake hard at any speed there is no shaking at all. If im on the highway, one moment theres no shaking at all. 5 min. later it will start to shake with cruise set the whole time.. then later it goes away. its wierd ive had professionals look at it and there stumped, everything is nice and tight.. i have replaced all pads and rotors (drilled and slotted aswel), brand new rims and tires and balanced several times stil no change. This week im gunna replace the steering shaft. its starting to rattle more and more so i guess thats next and hope for the best. mine has 65k miles and the issue started at alittle over 40k

***UPDATE*** Went to the dealership to have my factory recall performed and had them check the front and rear brake systems. Turns out my ebrake was engaged, meaning it did not release when put down, and was dragging on my rotors, pads, and calipers. This was causing the shimmy in the steering wheel and will now cost $1112 to repair. They have to replace all of the brake components. Worst day ever!!!!!

that doesnt make sense.. u didnt smell the brakes getting hot? to have that much damage u would have to feel the drag caused be the ebrake or smell, smoke, somthin.. and for 2 ebrake is only on the rear brakesand is cable driven has nothing to do with the front brakes to my knowledge to cause a shake in the steering wheel... id take it to another dealer.. unless i missed somthing it sounds like ur getting screwed

One would think, however, once they disengaged the e-brake completely, the shimmy in my steering wheel is non-existent. I have almost 80k miles on those brakes anyways and its a standard maintenance - R1 Concepts is giving me an amazing deal on the replacement parts and the dealership is giving me a discount on labor so I feel really good about it.
