Shift Times
Hey guys i own a 2006 Pontiac Pursuit GT For the americans who dont really know what it is its the Cobalt SS/na but Pontiac haha, with the 2.4 litre 171hp Engine i was just wondering what is a good RPM to shift at because i have been shifting at about 4000 and everything seems to be fine i was just wondering if that may be a little high?

If the car is new (only 500-750 miles on the car), then 4000 is a bit high. Take it down to 3500 or if you could 3000. But if your car is already broken in....you should be shifting right before and exactly when it hits the red when you are driving "spiritly". Normally, around town, I shift anywhere from 2000-2500 rpm. I don't need any more rpm to be going around the city.

no to mention babying an engine on breaking is not recomended for max power or durability ..you want to show it all the entire rev spectrum without soaking with with too much heat to cause glazing ...

What colour is your car? I have seen several around recently.
IMO--4000 is fine. Thats how I broke in my car. It was hard to do but worth it I think.
Feel free to shift lower but a max of 4000rpm.

You should shift around 3000 rpm. The car should have enough power by then.
I shift from 1st to 2nd at 3000 rpm. 2nd to third at 3000 rpm, and then third to fourth isn't as high.
Just don't labour your car by shifting too early. Nor don't rev it up at 4000 rpm constantly.
