so uhh...i was driving with no air filter...
on tuesday, the car started acting funny. i paid no attention because it was like -10deg outside and assumed "oh, cold air. car no likey cold air." whatever, dismissed it. Wednesday rolls around and we're getting hit with a massive storm and the plows are out sanding the **** out of the roads. very slushy outside. car still acting kinda funky: weird idle surge, highway slight bucking in vaccum, and loss of power. today i had some free time and decided to take a gander. I changed the plugs, even though they looked pretty good. Looked at the airfilter in the bumper and it was dark, couldn't see. So I got a flashlight, shined it in and to my amazement there was no filter on the end of the pipe I nearly shat a brick. I put the filter back on after cleaning it and the MAF and tightened that **** up so it will never come off.
So go tighten your airfilters up. We don't need you to suck up sand. It's not good for the motor.

yea i guess i see what you mean...not sure if something like that could bend a valve or not...i think the biggest worry would be in the combustion chamber...but like you said...probably just be easier to get a new engine

I had a recent problem with a saturated filter and my MAF shorted so try to take it out on the road and go WOT and if it sputters thats a good sign your MAF sensor is bad. And hopefuly nothing bad was sucked into your engine.
