Temp Gauge reading 208
I went out this evening to get something to eat and was driving for about 5 minutes and got in line. i noticed that my car was running at 203 degrees. so i shut it off until i have to move in line and the try and get back home quick. on the way the temperature got to 208 before i got it off. probably taking it to the dealer tomorrow. any ideas, i took off the plastic valve cover the other day but don't think that this would cause the car to over heat.
any ideas on what the problem might be?

the cooling system in the cobalt is based on movement. so it's not unusal and nothing to worry about if you see high temps, especially while sitting in traffic, or parked, or doing something like going through a drive through. completely normal. the temps will start going down once you start moving again.

cuz when im in traffic i dont shift much and i stay in gear and its usually upper 2ks to 3k and the dfco is really slow so it gets hotter more than normal

To the op, you can is fine till 240ish. 208 is normal even on the cool side

208 is fine, the car doesnt even care about 208, thats still warming up.
The ECM commands Low Speed Fans ON under the following conditions:
• Engine coolant temperature (ECT) exceeds approximately 106°C (223°F).
• A/C refrigerant pressure exceeds 1 310 kPa (190 psi).
• After the vehicle is shut off, the ECT at key-off is greater than 140°C (284°F) and system voltage is more than 12 volts. The fans will stay on for approximately 3 minutes.
The ECM commands High Speed Fans ON under the following conditions:
• ECT reaches 110°C (230°F).
• A/C refrigerant pressure exceeds 1 655 kPa (240 psi).
• When certain DTCs set

The oil temp gauge is gonna be trickier, you pretty much gonna have to drill into your oil pan.. Cheap to replace if you mess up, or need the hole gone someday, but hard to make sure you dont get any metal bits in the crankcase/ Drill your oil filter housing, easy enough to do, easier to make sure no metal bits get inside engine, but it you mess up or need the hole to go away...you need a block. You could also gt creative and install the sensor(assuming its an electric gauge) into your oil filter cap....NO chance of getting debris in engine if your careful, and very inexpensive if you mess up or need to go back to stock. Just takes a few extra parts(a small harnees needs to be made, or quick connects need to be used for mechanical oil pressure) and a little extra time to change the oil. you CAN NOT install a mechanical oil temp gauge this way though. only electric oil temp and mech or elec oil pressure.
