My 2.2 would do it whenever it was raining and I took a corner while giving it alot of gas. The light would come on and it would shift hard as hell. Then when you shut the car off and restarted it was normal again. That is the main reason I got my B&M shiftplus! It hasn't done it since I put it on.

I'm gonna go ahead and assume your Check Engine Light (CEL) is Illuminated. I haven't read through the other responses on this thread, but I had the same T/C Light problem for a long time, before I learned how to fix it. First off it's on because of a sensor or solenoid malfunction.
To my knowledge, I've got 2 diagnosis [plural w/e) for the problem.
1. Mass airflow sensor is faulty.
Here is a thread I pasted in relating to that.
https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/2-4l...g-hard-281273/
A new mass airflow sensor off eBay can be bought relatively cheap ~$30-$40
2. If you pull a P0128 CEL code with an OBDII scanner that you can rent from O'Reilleys Auto Parts (for example), it will say (either one or both): Intake Camshaft Actuator Solenoid or Exhaust Camshaft Actuator Solenoid [They might say over-performing] In either case, one or both are faulty and this is a common problem for our cars.
[] I would reccommend pulling the engine codes, and update us as to what you find. If you fall into either of the 2 diagnosis listed above, I can definitely help you the entire way through the repair process without spending premiums at a shop. []

I'll second that on the CMP Solenoids. My Intake solenoid had an open circuit (bad solenoid) and every once in a while my transmission used to do that. I'm pretty sure it shifts hard because it goes into a "safe mode" where it raises line pressure to prevent slipping in the transmission due to an increase/ decrease in engine output. I would definitely check to see if you are throwing a code for the solenoids, or MAF code. If it's a MAF code they also have MAF sensor cleaner at any parts store, it actually does help a handful of times it has for me on various vehicles. It's cheaper than a MAF sensor and should be cleaned every time you change air filters anyway.

My 2.4 did that a couple of years ago and was driving me nuts with the hard shift and my trans was tuned for a harder shift. Well what happened was all of this electronic stuff is a pain in the a##. It got so bad that when I would hit the gas hard the light would go on took it to the dealer and it ended up being a bad cam sensor.

06Cobalt2.4 is correct.
You will have very hard shifting and your traction control will disable if you have a MIL case. Some of the codes will be thrown but not set off the "check engine" light on the first occurrence. They may end up resetting before a second occurrence and wont end up setting off your "check engine" light
I've had this happen to me but that was my doing when I was first calibrating my MAF tables. Once I dialed them in it quit happening. I also had my TC light come on when both of my cam shaft solenoids were failing. I've since had both replaced. In the case of the solenoids those disabled traction control but did not result in hard shifts. In the case of MAF, that did result in hard shifts. If you have an aftermarket intake you may notice this happen. If you don't have an aftermarket intake then do as 06Cobalt2.4 is suggesting and get your engine checked for thrown codes. Your cam shaft solenoids should be covered under the emissions warranty if your powertrain warranty is over. They will fight you on this though.
I had my first one replaced under powertrain warranty and just replaced the exhaust sensor on my own when that failed about a year later since the solenoid is cheap and super easy to replace. I didn't feel like leaving my car with them for 2 days to do a job that can be done in less than 2 minutes.

had this happen and heard a knocking coming from te tranny... i just pull over shut my car off and restart it and it goes away... you can manually turn your t/c off while driving by shifting to low and back up to drive
