Try Erasing ECMs Occasionally
My SS/NA has been accelerating a little too slow for me lately. I've been driving the car like a "grandpa" for the best gas mileage lately and was a little disappointed with the get-up-and-go. Just to see what would happen, I erased the codes in the ECM -- even though I didn't have any so that it would have to re-learn again (this sets the sensors back to the original specs and the ECM begins to re-learn all over). First thing I noticed when I started it was the exhaust was a lot quieter and smoother -- I have CED's RT 2.75" cat back -- so it was very noticable. The acceleration feels quicker. If you have a scan tool and can erase your ECM you might consider doing this if your 2.4L seems a bit sluggish. It would be interesting to see what would happen on a dragstrip -- before and after to see what effect this would have on ET and MPH -- especially after driving the car slowly in stop-and-go traffic for a month or more.

if blowing out learned spark/fuel trims means your getting more performance you need a tune, or switch fuel grades.
bad terminology btw, i erased my ecu once... battery went out while 'write entire'... defiantly not a performance enhancer.

Not pushing it as a performance enhancer -- if you drive your car easy for a long time the learned settings will convert to help you get MPG. Bringing it back to the original settings will allow the car to work towards HP. Since I don't know how to tune and no one provides the specifics on how to do it ("just get HP Tuners" doesn't describe how-to for the novice) this could help someone when they take it to the track every once in a while.

I'm not sure this resets the sensors. The factory service manual says to clear the ECM to reset the sensor values. It doesn't mention anything about disconnecting the battery to do this. Seems like it would but not sure.

On the other hand if you have a Interceptor guage it can be done from that as well, or just visit your local Auto Zone store and ask them very nicely and they will clear it for you.

On old OBDI systems, diconnecting the battery for an alotted time did reset the ECM/ECU. On a OBDII system that has been on cars since 1996 that does not work. The ECM now have a CMOS battery just like a PC so disconnecting the battery will do nothing.

when i used to go on long trips (country wide), id run 87 octane gas, just because it was cheaper.
when i got to SLC, UT with the higher elevation, and id run 93 again, the car ran like crap (no getup and go).
I found that filling your tank with 93, plus an octane boost(which will help overide the 87 **** that was in before), then unhooking the battery, smoking a cigarette made a difference.
Now that i have to run premium gas regardless, i wont have to worry about that.
