To turbo or not to turbo...

So I'm stuck and want some advice. One way or another i want a turbo. But, I can't decide if I wanna turbo my 2.4.. or trade it in for an lnf. My goal is around 350-380 ponies daily driving... Advice?

Is your current car paid off? Do you have enough to buy the kit and probably a bunch of other little ****? Do you have time to install it while having transportation on the side? If you answered no to these then you'll probably be better suited buying an LNF. That's just my opinion though man.

LNF would be a much easier rout but you'll likely have more transmission troubles with the F35 vs the F23 which just needs a LSD.

My car will be paid off in about a year, which is when I plan to do the conversion, money is not really an issue, but if its paid off, it'll be cheaper I presume in the long run, having no more car payments.

And I would have a car for the time needed.

Turbo yours, break it, then rebuild it strong.

What year is your car first off? There are some 2.4s that are stronger than the others and are better to build on.

Two things to consider...

Pro's

LE5 is a much larger motor, 2.4 liters, and makes a metric **** ton more torque when an appropriate size turbo is added (see 2.3 mazda MZR or ford focus ST)
Supposedly better transmission
Probably cheaper in the long run if conservative and well taken care of.

Con's

LE5 has weaker internals in general
probably more complex to change compared to the LNF which is already factory setup for turbo
any sort of warranty you had is now gone

You'll get way more satisfaction from doing it yourself too, instead of buying an LNF and bolting a different turbo on.

lol yeh i used to think that too, but sometimes you just want a car to work, rather then having to deal with a ton of problems to make it work after you mod the hell out of it. Sometimes aggravation is worse then satisfaction.

Lots of good feedback here. (Why I love css)

Anyways, it's a 2006. I have not just myself, but two incredible mechanic friends, the sort that like to build cars from nothing, and work first try...and then last 200k miles...lmao. Beyond that, I also like the idea that it would be totally custom.

I would certainly get forged internals though, anything over 250hp on the stock I would imagine would seriously damage the engine.

2.4 does over 250 easily.

Exactly my point, that's why I would be getting forged without question.

And again I like the idea it'll be paid off, so if I am going to be making car payments I want it to be on one I am not modding (ie potentially breaking lol)

aggravation is all part of the game, it's not for everyone I guess

The only information ive been able to find regarding this are rumors. GM does not list a single spec for forged internals for the early LE5's, only the LAF motor.

lol forgive me for saying this but if i was turboing my motor id want something a little more concrete about the internals other then just hear say on the forum. For all intents and purposes the rods on this motor appear to be pretty tiny to begin with.

There were pictures awhile back showing what the rod looked like

Yeh but how does looks determine whether or not it is forged or not, it clearly cant be the same part as the LSJ or LNF because the bore and stroke are different.
