not sure about bp, although i know mechanics that swear by it. but, it can't be that bad (or good), they signed a deal with ford to put the bp logo on all the fuel caps for 07s saying ford recommends bp.

they're putting in a bunch of texacos around here, and all have signs everywhere saying they're top tier. which makes sense, since its chevron gas with chevron additives.

add another to the list saying they get better mileage with shell. mine gets about 1.5-2 mpg more typically on shell than bp ultimate, and about 1 more than on sunoco/texaco/chevron

ill have to look into that top tier for gas stations around here. the main stations i go to are CITGO, mobil, Sunoco. those are the only ones that are near me and my work. there is 1 shell near me and it does have the V power gas there.

last I heard bp wasn't listed ... as can be seen from the list which is updated as the stations meet requirements.

Texaco isn't chevron, its shell. BP is not among the top tier, and ford has different standards.

I only use 93. I filled up this morning in Raleigh, NC for $2.57 a gallon! This was at a Sheetz on Crapital Blvd. I can tell a big difference in 87 and 93. I am going to put a few gallons of 100 on my way to the drag strip this Thursday

it will ruin gas mileage and completely ruin your power for that tank of gas so if your trying to save money dont cus you will spend more filling up more often going that route than just paying the extra couple bucks for a full take of 91

That still didn't answer my question..

I asked if by switching from 87 to 91 after a year of using 91 will it mess up my engine, i would wait til i was on empty before i changed.

I put in 91 all the time. Also, for the people running on 100....that can actually hurt your performance/gas mileage. The car wasn't built to burn that high of an octane. I still love going to the track and watching civics put in 107

i dunno when I put 101 in it I could definantly feel a power difference I mean REALLLLLY feel it. I only did it that one time and still remember it well ... cus right after hauling down the on ramp and gettin down to cruise speed (on my way to firebird raceway) some chick nearly nailed me cus she felt she could cross 3 lanes of traffic without a care in the world.

I think that "top-tier" business is a bunch of crap.
Most of those brands of gas listed on that site sound more like second rate gas stations like speedway than top tier.
Mobil and BP are the big name gas stations around here and I would bet any money
their gas is better than some of those two-bit companies on that list.
I think its just a marketing gimimick by all of these small time gas stations to try
to sound like they have better gas than the big boys like BP and Mobil.

i got my car about a week ago, and i filled it up with 87, and then i saw this thread and i opened it up, i filled my ss with 93 yesturday after school and i dont think im ever going to put in anything less than 91 again, the engine sounds better, and my throttle response seems a tad better. i hope my gas mileage goes up to, because i only got 286 miles on my last tank of 87.

Hey guys sorry to bump an old topic but I just decided to read through the forum and saw this and I have a question.. I have the SS sedan and I've been using 87 octane since I got it (I'm on mile 2887) and I didn't know GM recommended octane 91 until now.. if I start using it will it do anything negative to the engine because it's used to the 87 or will it just enjoy the new entree? Thanks.

Forgot to mention I ONLY use Exxon/Mobil or Shell depending on where I am.

it states or has been stated you might hear a slight knock or your engine will not have the performance it should. But all in all just switch to the higher grade n you'll be ok. If you can not afford it then i dont know what to say.

well, keep using the gas you are using and pull your head apart in 50k miles and look at your valves. the look at the valves using top-tier. night and day difference. we've discovered it is bar non better for your car in the long run and we have plenty of proof to back it. ill try to scrummage up some pics tomorrow and post them...
