Installing Cathodes

Hey guys, I have been searching the forums under the how-to's, and even search function.

what I am looking for is a good detailed instructions on wiring cathodes lights I bought for inside my car. I already have them under my dash strung up with zip tie's and double sided tape, from what I was told, I could just slice the wires into the cigarette wiring by my E-brake as it provides the right voltage I need. and ground it out by my e-brake (with the cover off)

I bought a switch for my lights which have three wires, so I am guessing 1 is for on, ground and off.

I took off the cover by my e-brake and saw the wiring for the cigarette lighter, but kinda confused on which wires I would actually need to splice into. I got the lights from http://www.oznium.com/ so I have the Dual Cathode Transformer and the switch from them.
But the transformer has two wires, and the switch itself has 3, where do the two wires of the transformer go to, does it go to the switch?!? then only 1 wire from the switch goes to the spliced wire of the cigarette?

any detailed help, pics, a diagram, or even point to the right direction would be a lot of help!, Thank you

Ok. So, I have two of those kits of Oznium installed in my car right now.

You need to run one wire from the transformer to the switch, and then another wire from the switch to the power source, making a loop. The third wire on the switch is to ground, and the transformer needs to be grounded as well.

I hooked up everything to a little plug that just goes right into my cigarette lighter like a cell phone charger. Provides a ground source there as well, as you don't have to splice into wires.

I'll make up a little diagram and post it here once I get it done.

okay that would be awsome, even it is a pencil/pen drawing ^_^ and you take a pic of that and posted it

so it makes sense, 1 wire from the transformer to ground, and 1 to the switch, and then so 1 wire from the switch to a ground, and the 3rd one of the switch to power

kinda makes perfect sense, thank you for the help so far, I just didn't think I had to ground the transformer, so I was kinda stuck on that part and was wondering what to do with an extra wire :P

I noticed that somebody above posted a long thing saying how he hooked his up. but I will explain as well lol

the switch has 3 prongs. 1 source, 1 power load, 1 ground.

the catholds have a "transformer box" out of this box after the 2 lights are plugged in the other side has a positve (red) and negative (black)

ground the black wire on the catholds.

attach the red wire from the catholds to the source on the switch.

attach the power load (12v cig. lighter) the red wire to the load wire on the switch

ground the switch with a black wire to the frame or something

I did try posting a how to on all of this like last friday but they never accepted it apparently

Thank You everyone for the How-to, It made perfect sense.

But I'm afraid the lights don't work The switch lights up, so I have power. the transformer that the lights are plugged in, lights up. So it has power... just the lights itself don't come on. I even kept it on for a few mins maybe thinking it takes time to warm up... nothing

So, I thought it may be because I had to much on drawing power... So I unplugged 1 light (as there are two) nothing. I by-passed the switch. plugged the transformer directly to the power source and it lights up again so its getting power. but the lights still don't light up.

I checked and double checked the wires, checked the grounds that they were proper. removing the ground made the lights go out, so I know I have good ground.

Any thing else I may have missed, or suggestion?? Or do you think I just got bad lights??

P.S. I used the Cigarette lighter 12V. So I cut the red wire of that. now the black wire is still in tacked to the Cigarette lighter, do I cut that up and re-ground it also???

I had a few times actually ^_^ but no response, I asked a few times in the forums and I guess you were kinda busy and skipped over it, its no biggie, but do you think what else may be the issue Jeff??

never mind.. found out what the issue was.. seems like the tubes itself are cracked.

Don't know when it happened. As the lights were placed under the dash and glove box. 3-4 months ago. so they were on there for awhile, just never hooked up for lighting till now. And the tube is cracked in the same spot for both of them..Not sure if it was something I didn't notice untill after shipping or not. so Time to place an order for more now O.o

yah, getting the lights in one piece is a challenge. I have 4 lights, have gone though probably 10 lights... They come broken, get kicked by accident... etc. At least they are cheep.

Hehe, no problemo Jeff, I understand your busy with what you do, so it was no big deal. So everything is all hooked up, and when I get my lights, there is actually nothing to be wired now. since it is all done, the Transformer is still hooked up to the switch etc. So when I get the new lights, I just have to plug them into the transformer and thats it ^_^

But one thing for sure, is when I get a new box for my subwoofer, I am definitely going to need your help on wiring that up

Hey man, I saw you had problems with your underdash setup. Here's what I did: I got 2 of them, they are 2 different kinds, both have sound sensor switches, but one had a built in transformer and the other had a separate transformer.
All I did was cut off the 12v plug end so I had the 2 wires, they were plenty long, so I had my switch on the floor, my 2 lights on either side on the floor. I ran 1 power wire from my + on my batter to the switch. used an electrical fitting and hooked up both + from the lights into one fitting, and then both - and the batt - into one fitting. Slid those onto the switch and tested the entire system before I installed it, it took a little while, and I had to turn off the sound sensors, sometimes 2 or 3 minutes, but the transformer's spool up and then the lights flick on, eventually. Remember neons are like 30,000volts and small small amps. Then I stuck the lights under the dash with tape, and then I screwed the switch under the dash on the driver side, right next to the console. If you have a dremel you can cut out and pop the switch in itself instead of using the screw attachment it has......i can give you pics if you want.....
