Re Painted/Covered door panels, pics 56k slown down.
Just re did my door panels on my base 2.2. Had a bored weekend with spare time so i took the time to re cover my inserts and sand down and paint my doors, which were done poorly in the first place, and re covered poorly in the first place. Now they look a ton better. Here are some random pics just thrown together throughout the process, in no particular order. let me know what ya think. i am gonna do the clove box and under the steering wheel next weekend as i have a lot of material left over.

2 questions, what kind of paint, and how long/hard was it to do? i have the same interior, and i HATE it. the damn gray seats get so dirty, and i haven't tried to clean it off, but i'm sure it's not easy.

Just get your fabric of choice to re cover the panels, and spray the stock panel with spray adhesive and spray the back side of your fabric, then slowly work it onto there and ironing it out before and after to assure you don't get any creases. It pops outta the door panel after drilling away at the knobs that hold it down. I would follow the how to , to make it more clearer. As far as re wrapping the fabric being easy, yes and no. Be patient with it so you dont mess it up. It is very reversable as this is the 3rd time i've re wrapped it because i keep changing my mind.
lets start from the front.
1. What kind of paint
- For the door panels themself, krylon fusion is great if u want that stock texture to it.
- I USED--- Rustoleum textured flat black paint. Its made for metal but with a lot of sanding and prep work, it sticks well. Very well, and its textured and it wont chip easily. O
- To finish it, i used krylon Matte clear coat, it eliminates any gloss to it, as glossy interior is rather ricey aka importish should i say.. that clear coat also protects it from scratches and the elements. the handle, door locks and what not. I used sunbeam yellow krylon fusion for plastics, no primer needed but i do recommend sanding it smooth before, and slapping it with some matte clear coat after.
2. How hard/long was it to do
-Be patient, its all in the prep work. Take your time and scratch it up with some coarse sand paper, then work your way down to some find sand paper. Primer is optional. All in the prep work though.
-Its not hard, just takes time, took me friday night and saturday until 4pm, sleep and breaks in between, lol.
-Covering the door inserts takes decent amount of time. Just make sure you get good fabric that will hold up, and if u get cloth, go to walmart or your local furniture store and buy stain guard and spray it so it doesnt stain easy if its a light color like my yellow.

thanks, it all pops of easily once u get the door panel off, just make sure u sand a lot and clear coat it to protect it.

Looks good. I painted my LS interior smoked gray and black and recovered the inserts in black suede. The gray isnt much of a difference from the neutral but just the suttle difference is a major improvement imo. Here are some pics
I also started to carry this theme to the rear seat area. Recovered the rear deck with the same suede and painted the area around the windows in black but haven't gotten to painting the neutral that is left the smoked gray color

u will need spray adhesive to get the new fabric to stay on the inserts. You will also need some sort of glue to reattach the insert to the panel. It is attached by melted plastic rivets of sorts normally but you have to cut them to get the inserts out to recover them.

yep.
im done with the first panel... heres some pics. what do you think?
i used a plastic scraper about 4" wide to smooth everything down
i will go over it one more time to fine tune things. there is a little bit i need to smooth down in the lower right. but it will turn out fine
