Radar detector question.

Radar detector question.
So, a buddy and I were talking the other day about radar detectors.
He's all for the Bel STI, as it is immune to RDD's (even the new Spectre IV). I'm more stuck on the V1 as it has a higher sensitivity, and a rear antenna... though it's traceable from over 1000ft.
Now, I'm not trying to debate the two models... What I'm after is some info... cause we may have found a loophole.
We later got to thinking, (assuming we were in a province where they are illegal) even if the RDD goes off, don't the cops have to actually see your detector to issue a fine?
With that said, they have probable cause to search your vehicle, right?... where do you hide the detector?
How about this.... a self marked mailing package?
Cause legally, no where in Canada, can they open your mail.
Comments?
I live in Saskatchewan, so it's not really a big deal to me... but in case I decide to go east bound one day, I figured I should check.
Now, for those that don't know... here are the Canadian laws;

# Canada
* Illegal:Newfoundland & Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island,New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, the Yukon Territory, the Northwest Territories[5]: Regardless of whether they are used or not, police there may confiscate radar detectors, operational or not, and impose substantial fines in provinces where radar detectors are illegal.[6]
* Legal: Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan

lol.... sure, if you want to carry a box everywhere, and you can be quick to unplug and unmount the thing off of your windshield before the cop notices what you are doing
I would just stay away from shitty places where they are illegal lol.

They aren't that big...
I was thinking a packing envelope... just big enough for the detector to slip into, yet small enough to fit int he glove box.
And those 'shitty places' happens to be all of Canada, except the 3 western provinces.

Maybe someone can elaborate
# United States law varies from state to state, but detectors are generally legal in private vehicles under the Communications Act of 1934[7] and illegal in commercial vehicles by DOT regulation (49 CFR 392.71). Exceptions:
* Illegal in all vehicles: Virginia, Washington D.C., U.S. military bases
* Illegal in commercial vehicles under state law: Illinois, New York (specifically, commercial vehicles over 10,000 pounds (4,500 kg) and all vehicles over 18,000 pounds (8,200 kg))
* Indirectly illegal: Minnesota and California (illegal to hang anything from the windshield with suction cups; however both dashboard and visor mounting is allowed.) [1]
* Repealed: Connecticut (repealed in 1998)

California is a bunch of nuts, flakes and fruits. Minnesota is still a state?
Haha, it basically has to do with blocking your view out of the windsheild. but there are plenty of other ways to mount a detector...
And yes in commercial vehicles such as semis, tractor trailer units, and so on they are illegal.

i never knew they were illegal on military bases. everybody has them up here on base and military police never do anything along w/ the civilian police.
but how bout mounting a v1 in a self marked envelope and put that above your sun visor and just keep it in the package. You can then buy the remote systems and have that hidden in ur dash somwhere and have all the wires hiding as well.

I'm not sure storing the unit in the self marked package... you need to keep the antenna's clear of obstruction to allow them to work properly.
You'd need to keep an already postmarked, but unsealed package in the glove box, and only put it int there if the cops pull you over.

The best way to hide a radar detector IMO is how my friend did it 4 years ago.
Disasemble the radar unit and unsolder the led connectors and resolder to wire.
Run said wire to dash and create holes in dash are if you really want to be cool do it on your console where the gauges are at. Mount the detector behind the firewall in a hide away spot and run wires thru firewall. Run the power to use the same power as the radio.
So what happens is your driving down the road your dash lights up and cops pull you over.
You turn the radio off before they come to the car and even if RDD went off they can't find it with out taking the car apart.
Was a cool setup to bad he sold the car but forgot to tell the owner about the detector.
Guy called him the next day trying to find out what the flashing lights were.

every once in a while, they'll do checks for radar detectors. they'll stand on an overpass, and look down at the highway, blip the gun, and watch for brakelights. then radio down to a guy on the ground.
dont know how the mail idea would pan out. youd think it would be too much of a bother though, and there has got to be a way around that. otherwise everyone would giftwrap their drugs before making a deal.

you'd be surprised. zip lock bags, tape, etc. then into a box.
i know they would never check your mail for a radar detector.... but could they? if they for some reason suspected it?

Drug trafficking or possession; big fines, jail time, record
I don't think they would go to the trouble....

yeah, i know they wouldnt, but just wondering if they could, for the time when a cop on a bad day just wants to nail you for something. i've thought about getting a radar detector, but i really dont know whether it would benefit me where i live. and i dont wanna risk getting caught with one.

They probably could, but the hassle it would take for the RCMP or city cops to even do it wouldn't be worth it. I'm pretty sure they need a warrant to open any mail.
It would have to be a bad day for a cop, crown lawyer, and a judge...

if i did end up getting one, i would hide it to the left of the steering wheel, in that compartment. i think one or more members on here have it there. would be a good place to have it so it would just flip up and be hidden.

And that is the great thing aobut the V1. The concealed display. I live in VA and have been running the V1 for 2 years with no problems. Just have to hide the wires right. My dad has been running around with his on his bikes and in his cars in VA for well over 6-7 years and never had any problems. Just don't get pulled over. "It ain't a crime if you don't get caught and she ain't a ho if you don't get laid" - as said by Everlast.

This is an old topic, but I went to brandon, Manitoba one time to take my newly turned 18 cousin a beer and a stripper, and didn't notice the no radar detector sign when crossing the line, and got a fine... lol.

Hey Tyler,
What is the specific model of radar you are looking at doing? I'm just starting to research this as I'm going to remote mount one somewhere in the Redline but haven't kept up on them over the last few years. Any info you can give would be appreciated.

At one point I was going to go with the RX-75 / SR7, but went away from the route when I learned that they don't pick up rear signals, and aren't as sensitive as the current model in car detectors.
Bel is making a remote mount STI, but it will probably run in the $1k range... too rich for me.
