The stiffer the fines, the more likely to nail, and bail.

Oh boy, this could get interesting. I kept reading and saw that the law also applies to drivers caught "slaloming in and out of traffic" and "slingshoting past cars from a red light". Who decides exactly what constitutes "Slaloming" and a "slingshot". Sounds like someone can get fucked over pretty easily if a cop has a really strict interpretation of the law or is just having a bad day.

And there lies the problem. Cops interepting the law... Why even have a law book, lets just have them driving around making laws up as they go... This is going to get very interesting and could create a lot of backlash...

a week without your car isnt too bad for 50 over. if they catch you actually racing someone they crush your car. first week we had that law here (ontario.... not sure about the rest of canada) they crushed 2 Z06's. I'm pretty sure i would have cried if i saw my Z06 the size of a coffee table.

I know its illegal (In MN and most states) to have Nitrous hooked up to your car while on public roads.

awww geeze .... what next.... it's getting ridiculous

I believe that you should be allowed to get certified to speed. Special training (additional fee required) that gets you a state or government issued decal that allows you to speed up to your level of driving education (80, 100, 120 on appropriate roads)....naturally the highways would need to convert the fast lane for people w/ this certification... kinda like Autobahn style

I would gladly pay extra every year for the right to speed w/o prosecution

I believe that the police can make up speeding revenue by ticketing morons for:
not using a turn signal
improper equipment
cel phone use while driving
ect, ect....

do I need a flame suit for this? will NOMEX do?

I agree, since the average driver is an idiot they need those limits. They have horrible reaction time and shouldn't be on the road to begin with. If your reaction time is below 0.18 you should have more rights. Just as much the car would have to be overall rated for those speeds and certain roads would still be unsafe. It would then come down to exactly how it should be. You will not be ticketed for speed, but for reckless driving. So you do 120 on a 3 mile straight away with no cars and you are certified no ticket. You do 80 in heavy traffic you get the ticket for driving carelessly. The law is too cut and dry right now. I got my last ticket for going too fast while merging. There are certain times when you are justified to hit the gas for a short burst or speed, especially if you have the reflexes and ability to safely do it. Keep in mind though it would also require more expensive inspections and they would be more often. You can't be certified to speed if your car isn't well maintained either. Other than that I see no valid cause for objection other than the normal idiot flamers.

Makes me angry because all day I see people no signal turns, cutting off a lane turning, running up one ways streets, recklessly cutting around in traffic... yet they bust you for safely speeding in a temporary situation.

Funny. A similar law is being imposed in Fla pertaining to only bikes.

30mph or more over a posted speed limit (OR) wreckless driving will get you arrested, get your bike siezed and also get your motorcycle endoresment suspended for 10 yrs. thus provoking more bikers to run than ever before...

I don't think it's such a bad law EXCEPT for this little gem:

"Under the new law, there will be no right of appeal in the case of a suspension or impoundment, Woolley said."

Isn't the right to appeal what keeps the system more honest?

Completely disagree. The problem isn't necessarily that YOU have a lack of skill or are unsafe at those speeds, it's that the other driver's on the road are morons. And the faster you drive, the less time you have to avoid them, even with a near-perfect reaction time.

There's no cure for stupid. There will NEVER be a cure for stupid, so for those of us that COULD drive over the speed limit we're limited by the lowest common denominators of driving society.

In all honesty, it'd be nice to see more laws along these lines (only more specific in the wording - "weaving" in traffic is broad, as is "slingshoting"). I have my license to speed, I pay my fees, go to the track, and have at it for a day or two of 145mph racing and I'm good to go for a few months till I get back there.

AGREED w/ what I highlighted.... but the solution is driver education... it's just too darn easy and cheap to get a license here in North America. Until driver education reaches a level that REQUIRES drivers to know how to CONTROL a car (not just drive and park), we may be eternally doomed to drive among the sheep

A day at the track only keeps me happy for a week...I must be a speed junkie

Yeah, I agree with the driver education thing. Lucky for me my parents were STRICT when it came to what I had to be able to do go take my test. My mom used to set up mini auto-x courses with slaloms and stuff and would give me a minimum speed I had to drive through and not hit anything. That kind of stuff saved my butt quite a few times. LOL then my uncles decided it would be fun to set up a thing in the lot behind their dealership, it was probably 1/4 mile of straight access road about 3 lanes wide, they'd have me drive down and they'd all be standing around, along with my parents with cones and other non-damaging ****. I'd have to drive from one end to the other at 25mph while different people would randomly throw **** in front of the car and I'd have to play dodgeball with traffic cones. That alone has saved me from taking four deer to the hood, and one of those was during my driving test .

Now that there's a road racing track around here, they actually have a program where you can send your teen driver out with an instructor and they teach them how to deal with any and all road conditions. They have a skidpad area with sprinklers to simulate rain driving, they have the cars set up so that the instructor can induce a spin and make the teenager learn how to correct it, they do off-road recoveries so that if you get pushed off the road you can get back on safely. That kinda stuff is the what they need to be teaching and testing. That's more of a TRUE test of ability.
