technically you dont HAVE to have one....you could get tuned without it, as AFI will have one there to tune you with.
but tunes dont stay the same all year round....
its just a very good insurance policy so make sure your car is getting the right fuel all the time.

Next question.. If I ever need warranty work done on my car is chevy going to know that I changed the stage 2 tune and void it? I've owned a few GM's before and having no warranty after a few years would scare me... plus not to mention that i paid for extended warranty.

yes gm CAN find out you have changed the tune.
generally people wont have an issue,
because if you need warranty that might require them to check the tune,
most people will just reflash back before going in.

gm knows how many times our pcm's have been flashed as well. event timer.
