Ran the SS lastnight at Firebird.

Well, the car has 1,600 miles on the odo so I figured I'd give her a few runs. The heat lastnight was a miserable 102 degrees F at 10:00 PM..Ugh. Here are a few of the passes...

Lastnight was frustrating and satisfying at the same time. The heat was horrible, the track was worse (everyone running was pissed about track conditions and heat, some were a full second off normal times) and the car only wants to boost just a hair over 10 psi.
But with all of that, it still cut a 14.88, which gives me much hope for when it cools down.

Oh yeah, in stock form this is the worst sport car to run in the 1/4 mile ever produced, there is no such thing as traction in the Cobalt SS...just a whole lot of wheel hop.

Thoes are some great times for that heat and track condition, especially not even hitting full boost.

The Cobalt SS definately has no traction at the track lol, and it's torque-steer city.

With good enough conditions I bet you'd be in the low 14's.

Damn , lol .....my local track doesnt even inspect newer cars . Well unless they are obvious ALOT faster than stock .

I know what ya mean about launching this car . I know from expirience in mine that theres at least a lil over 1/2 second more in et "if" I could get the car off clean . Never have got full throttle in 1st gear ( or even close to ) yet and got it worked down from high 15's to 14.6-14.7 area Oddly I can lanch from a dig pretty good on the street , it spun and wheelhopped MUCH worse at the track . They need to let ya go from a roll at the strip , hehehe . 20 mph roll in first gear on the street puts the revs up around 4K , mash the go pedal and it just hooks and blast off like a little rocket ship

I got almost NO wheel hop at the track, just a lot of wheel spin.

Watch out for wheel hop cause it will harm your drive train ...

wow, good times. i love firebird, too bad i have to take a personal day off work just to go there.
i noticed your reaction times quickened, but your 60ft took longer. "60' 2.693" , hehe, my 75hp honda accord had that 60' time. actually it was 2.695. not bad for 75 to the crank huh? I ran that accord at firebird as well... Im curious on how my 2.2 cobalt will do.

great job.

I get better traction (and times) at Speedworld. Come out on a Friday Night to Speedworld, the format is bracket racing, but after you loose you can run in the time only lane. The nice thing is that for bracket racing, the track is prepped. My best 60' on the stock tires at Firebird was a 2.3. My best 60' at Speedworld on the stockers was a 2.0. Difference of running 14.3-14.4 at Firebird and running 13.8-13.9 at Speedworld.

I plan on borrowing a set of slicks (if they'll fit) for this Friday nighat and see if I can get my SRT-4 into the 11's. Last night it ran a best of 12.2@118 w/ DOT cheaters. That was also the lowest trap speed of the night, highest was nearly 122mph.

Yikes, that is why I am just going to wait until fall to run my car at the track. I don't want to see my car putting out 15 second quarter mile times....

I wouldn't worry about it. At your elevation, mid 14's may be possible with the right launch!

Gripping

Hey last night was goofing around with the rubber and i found that if you want a good 60 time you need to do the following before your run let your car go all through first (big burnout)gear as you pull up to the line, then as you start i found the car launches best on stock rubber at around 1800 rpms maybe a little higher, anythinf over 2200 rpm you just spin your tires, remember a little wheelspin is the best if you are on stock rubbers(not a lot). Try running your car again after doing this and post your numbers!!!!!!!!!!!

They will not let you burnout with street tires at my local track! Best 60 ft. time was 2.16 that run I pulled a 14.707@96.1mph. I will do better when it cools off though. Plan on going back in late Sept. or early Oct. I will post my times afterward. I should have a grip on posting pics. by then. I will post the above time and other 14 second passes that I have run when I figure it out.

Is anyone manufacturing aftermarket motor mounts for the SS/SC? I know they make a world of difference for wheel hop in a Type S. Of course, the stiffer mounts result in vibrations resembling a Harley Davidson at stop lights.

I made my own mounts for my SRT-4 and my Neon R/T. I bet I could make something for the Cobalt SS/SC, but would need to see one in person w/ the hood up, so I can study it a bit.
