The other day I went to shift into 5th gear, it engaged fine but then as soon as I let out the clutch and pressed the gas pedal and the transmission immediately jumped out of gear. Uh oh... The day before everything was fine. I have over 40K miles and my only issue has been CEL's due to driving in a heavy rain after my CAI installed.

After a little searching I found out that could be one of a couple things. First was cable adjustment. Tried that based on a post here (nice picture and description - forgot to save the link) and no change. Uh oh... Dealer... Crap...

Took it to the dealer yesterday and just got the call today: "Don't know what it is yet, but it will be covered under the drivetrain warranty. Come pick up your rental car".

Woohooooo!!!

That was a relief! The 100,000 mile drivetrain warranty is a little vague in what it covers (Transmission - "all lubricated parts"). I definitely can't afford to pay big bucks to get something like that fixed.

Will keep you updated on the diagnosis but I'm thinking 5th Gear Syncro. Never did it before so I think it probably just exploded...

i have 4100 on my 08 SS and i had the opposite problem, my trans wouldnt come out of 5th lol. It instead decided to go into two gears at once, i believe 1st and 3rd at around 20mph and that was the end of that. I brought it to my dealer two weeks ago yesterday and ive been waiting on GM to deliver a trans for about 5 days. Im glad im getting a new trans though instead of having them rebuild mine. O and i got a giant impala as my rental lol

Still nothing from the dealer. Good thing I'm driving a 2009 Malibu on these salt caked roads of Michigan instead of the 'Balt. Maybe they'll keep it until spring ;-)

Got the Cobalt back yesterday.

R&R Input shaft and gears...

Shifts fine now.

do you race in your overdrive gear aka 5th?

if you do i suggest when going into 5th dont slam it or anything GENTLY put it in 5th and dont do a quick shift or nothing. 5th gear is made for cruising not racing.

my boys skittle used to crunch going into 5th. some guy on his forum said he was the original owner and of course we told him to prove it.. he did so. he said when he used to race. he did powershifting all the way up to 5th on highway races and yea ended up replacing the synchros in 5th and reverse

Never raced. Period. Never gave a sign that anything was wrong prior to totally "giving up the ghost". 100% positive it was not abuse.
