Auto trans help
I've been searching for information on making the my auto trans stronger. I got some info from the GM performance handbook, the 4T65 and 3 speed mod kit good for 1200hp. Now I tried to do some more digging and got nothing, (before anything is said yes I searched the forum first and every other Cobalt forum site that I'm a member of as well as ecotec forums and the net) I looked up Jason whitfield's drag build and the info I found also made mention of the 4T65E and the 3 speed kit but any further digging gave me the same results... Notba damn thing but links back to the hand book. Name and part# searches also yielded nothing but links back to square 1. I forgot to mention I have a 4D LS 2.2L L61. Now does anybody know anything about any of this or am I crazy? Any info on this or just making the tranny hi hp ready (and I'm talking 600 or better, no such thing as to much power!) would be GREATLY appreciated.

Well to put the 4T65 in you'd need to do some rewiring. With that said I know there build kits for the 4T45E trans. but I can't find them either. I think there are a few members here who have these kits hopefully one of them will chime in.

Anyway, you can probably leave the 4th gear alone if your only planning on 600hp. You'll still want to look into upgrading clutch packs, cryoing anything you can, etc.

the 4t45e has been built to hold 500hp, im not sure of details of what goes into one to hold that power though.
the 4t65e-hd would be my choice for anything over 450hp. you can keep 4th gear if your going to drive it on the street, they remove it (actualy its just the clutches and hub that are removed) for less rotating mass. he 4t65e uses 2 shift solonoids, 1 epc (pressure control) solonoid and a lockup solonoid, just like the 4t45e, so a factory pcm should be able to control it, but tuning will be needed. as far as building one, id follow the gm build book as far as the geartrain and clutches go, just leave out the transbrake and leave 4th gear in it.

Thanks for that! That has been driving me nuts for quite some time now.
As for the power, I have a nice GT45 sitting idle waiting on the rest of the engine parts.

If some one wants a built 4t65, we build them on a regular basis. The 4t65 is in the Grand Prix. Our drag car goes mid 8's on a 4t65. We also have plenty of other 3800 cars that have ran 10's and 11's with the 4t65. We don't offer a kit for the swap but if you need the trans we have been building them for years. Check out the website.
